How to Choose a Mini Oven in the UK – Buying Guide

When you’re picking up a mini oven there are few factors you will need to consider. In this buying guide, we'll take you through what we think are the most critical choices to help you decide on the right one.

1

Choose the Right Size Oven for Your Cooking Needs

Choose the Right Size Oven for Your Cooking Needs

First and foremost, you’ll want to consider the capacity of the oven. The size required will depend on how many people you plan on cooking for, and what you intend to cook

There is no point in getting a 30 + litre capacity oven on the off chance that you’ll only use the full capacity now and then. However, if you have a large family, or plan to cook a casserole for four or more, then a bigger size would no doubt come in handy.

If you're buying for a couple, of just for yourself, then we recommend choosing an oven with a capacity of 21 L or less. This will give you plenty of room for cooking, without taking up too much space.

2

Make Sure It Has the Functions You Require

Make Sure It Has the Functions You Require

The number of cooking functions a mini oven comes with can range anywhere from 1 to 10 or more. These can be simple heating functions that let you control the temperature of the top and bottom chamber independently, or more specialised features, such as the ability to pasteurise milk to make yoghurt.

The functions you require will be unique to your particular cooking needs. So, choosing an oven with multiple functions may be preferable if you would like more flexibility from your appliance.

3

Consider Both the Minimum and Maximum Temperatures

Consider Both the Minimum and Maximum Temperatures

The range in temperature will determine what you can cook, or at least what you’re able to cook well. Most ovens come with a minimum and maximum temperature. Assuming that you’re looking to use it for roasting or grilling meats and vegetables, then you’ll likely only need an oven with a temperature range between 100 – 200 °C.

However, if you’re a keen baker, or you’d like to gently heat your croissants in the morning without having to watch over them diligently, then you might prefer a lower minimum temperature. The lowest we found was 50 °C, but anything from 60 °C upwards should be fine.

4

See If It Comes With Hobs for an All-In-One Appliance

See If It Comes With Hobs for an All-In-One Appliance

If you’re looking for an everyday appliance, then you might want to consider a mini oven with a hob. This way you can also use your oven for frying and boiling, making them the perfect all-in-one cooking machines.

When picking an oven with additional hobs, you’ll want to check whether they can be used at the same time as the main oven chamber, as unfortunately this is not always the case. If they can’t function at the same time, you may want to consider purchasing a separate hob unit.

5

The Wattage Will Determine How Much Oomph Your Mini Oven Has

The Wattage Will Determine How Much Oomph Your Mini Oven Has

The wattage of your oven will determine the power output and how fast it can heat up. If you’re not one for waiting around, or you have a larger family, then look for one that's over 1500 W to ensure dinner's ready on time.

For smaller households, and those with a bit more patience, a mini oven with a wattage between 1200 – 1500 W should be more than enough. If you’re planning on using it as an everyday appliance, then we would recommend going no lower than 800 W otherwise you'll be left waiting a long time for it to heat up!

6

Check If the Mini Oven Comes With Accessories

Check If the Mini Oven Comes With Accessories

Last but not least, check to see if it comes with any additional accessories. Many mini ovens will have simple accessories such as a baking tray and wire rack included. Though you may want to look for one that comes with a crumb tray to help keep the bottom of the oven clean, and handles for removing hot trays.

If you’re keen to use your oven to create the perfect roast chicken or slow-roast meat, then keep an eye out for a rotisserie fixing and handle. This will help alleviate that slight worry that your meats haven’t been cooked all the way through.

The Best All-In-One Mini Cooking Appliance

We love the contemporary finish of this mini oven from Russell Hobbs, but it didn't claw it's way to number 1 on looks alone. No, this is possibly the most practical all-in-one mini cooker you'll ever find, available for a very reasonable price.

The oven and hotplates can be used at the same time, meaning that you can roast, fry and boil all in one go. The large 30 L capacity offers enough space for even the hungriest bellies, and it has a perfect temperature range and a powerful wattage to get it warmed up in an instant.

Science Meets Cooking

Sage is known for using a scientific approach when producing their top of the range smart kitchen equipment. Not just 'smart' by name, the Element IQ sensor identifies exactly where the oven needs more heat and transfers it there via the five quartz elements to ensure precise and stable cooking.

To be frank, the only reason this product didn't take our number one spot is due to the high price tag. However, if it's within your budget, this is an extremely well-built piece of kit that's sure to be a great investment!

One for the Meat Lovers

If you're looking to bring the heat, then why not check out this mini oven from Murphy Richards. The design incorporates a rotisserie fixture, making this one for any meat aficionados out there hoping to cook succulent joints in their mini oven.

One factor to be wary of, is that you cannot put aluminium cookware in this oven. This could be an issue if you like to cover your fish or vegetables with foil when cooking, or if you use it to line the baking tray to save on washing up later.

A Convenient Mini Oven With Timer

If you're looking to purchase a mini oven for a caravan, holiday home, office canteen or student digs, then this could be right up your street. The mini oven comes with a baking tray and wire rack, so all you need to get started is a plug socket and some grub to cook.

Moreover, it has a 120-minute timer, so you'll get a little ding when your food is ready. Unfortunately, some users have found that the body of the oven can become fairly hot, which is something you'll want to be aware of depending on where you plan to put it.

A Mini Oven for Use at Home and on the Move

De'Longhi is a well-known brand known for their top quality kitchen appliances, and this mini oven is no exception! It has a temperature range of 60 - 220 °C and heats up pretty fast too, thanks to it's respectable wattage.

Furthermore, it has a double glass door and robust build for improved safety. Again, the capacity is less than optimal, but if you're looking for something that you could use to cook both at home and on the move, it might be perfect.

A Compact Mini Oven for Those Short on Space

First up is this compact space-saving appliance. This mini oven has two heating elements which can reach up to a whopping 230°C, with the option of two different shelving heights for cooking a range of dishes.

Be aware that this model is very small, even in the realm of mini ovens, a tiny 9 L capacity. This may be ok for one or two people, but is unlikely to be suitable for larger groups.
