How to Choose a Keto Snack in the UK - Buying Guide

Whether you are new to keto or not, choosing snacks to fit into your diet can be hard. We all like a little nibble from time to time, so it's important to find ones that fit your nutritional needs while still tasting great!

1

Pay Attention to The Nutrition Chart Trio

Of course, if you're going to do this diet, you've got to do it right in order to see results. When choosing a keto appropriate snack, it's important to study the nutritional information to make sure the fat, protein and carbohydrate content align with your preferred ratio.

Find Out How Much Fat Is Right for Your Diet

Find Out How Much Fat Is Right for Your Diet

Usually, our body turns carbohydrates into energy in order to stay active. When you eat less carbs on a keto diet, your body switches its dependency over to fat, a.k.a. ketosis. This means that you can actually eat more fat than you normally would, as your body processes it in a faster and more efficient manner.

Of course, this doesn't mean you should eat only fatty foods like fried chicken and chips. For example, beginners actually need more fat than long term keto dieters as their bodies are still getting used to the transition. When choosing your snack, make sure to check that the fat content is high enough to meet your own ratio.

It's really important when doing a low-carb diet that you don't avoid high-calorie foods completely -  this is something I see quite often in clinic.

You need to eat higher-fat foods in order to keep your cells running and although you may not eat lots of calories overall, individual foods may be higher than you are used to. It's also important to keep very strictly to the carb limits as going over will mean the body switches back to burning carbs and the fat you eat will get stored rather than used!

Protein Aids Muscle Growth and Fat Loss If Consumed Properly

Protein Aids Muscle Growth and Fat Loss If Consumed Properly

Protein is never a bad idea when it comes to weight loss, especially if you're active. You see, protein helps to fill you up and reduces hunger while aiding in muscle growth and repair. It's an easy way to ensure that you feel satisfied, without over eating.

On the SKD you should aim to keep your protein levels in the medium zone, so you'll want to consume less protein than fat. Too much and your body will change its energy dependency to protein. Of course, if you're on an HKD you should seek out snacks with a higher protein amount per 100g for strength training and to promote muscle growth.

Try to be consistent with your macro percentage intake. This will keep the body burning fat - both the fat you eat and, if you are trying to lose weight, the fat you have stored. Protein is an easy go-to snack if it's ready prepared and often has some fat in it too, particularly nuts, eggs, cheese, and some meats.

Don't Worry, You Don't Have to Avoid Carbs

Don't Worry, You Don't Have to Avoid Carbs

While it's important that carbs stay on the lower end of the scale, around 5% of your daily nutritional intake should be carb-based. This is because parts of our bodies still require carbs to function, like areas of your brain, the kidneys and your red blood cells.

As to not deprive your body of what it needs, you can incorporate a reasonable amount of carbs into your diet without falling off the ketosis wagon. There are plenty of tasty low-carb keto snacks, but even moderate carb options can be suitable too, providing it fits within your ratio.

Your carb limit still might be only around 25g however, depending on your body size. To put this into context, 25g is what you would get from a slice of bread, and this would be your intake for a whole day. But carbs are also found in vegetables which are a really important part of a healthy diet providing fibre and water-soluble vitamins. Don't sacrifice these for a bread-fix!

2

Sweet or Savoury - Understand What Your Body Needs

Sweet or Savoury - Understand What Your Body Needs

You're answering emails at work, when suddenly you're craving a chocolate bar, but why? This is because, sometimes when our bodies need certain nutrients, our minds trick us into wanting foods that we don't necessarily need. That's why you should try to listen your body before you head to the vending machine and instead opt for something a little more keto-friendly.

When you're on a diet, your body has to get used to the sudden drop in blood glucose. When this happens, you'll likely want to have something sweet. Luckily, you can still satisfy your chocolate cravings while you're on ketogenic diet by choosing a sweet snack with a higher fat to lower carb ratio.

Salt cravings are actually very common on a keto diet, due to the lower carbohydrates intake and reduced insulin levels. You don't want to deprive your body of what it needs, so savoury high protein treats like biltong and crackling will help you level out any imbalances in your new diet.

Some cravings are just down to habit, and learning to recognise this can help you manage them. If it's your habit to grab a pastry with your morning coffee for example, then you'll likely miss that pastry when it's not there.

Using mindfulness techniques to ride the craving wave can help you overcome it and stick to your diet. Acknowledge the craving and remind yourself that although you want the pastry, you actually want to reach your goals more. The craving will peak and then dissipate if you let it.

3

Make Sure Your Snack Fits Into Your Daily Allowance

Make Sure Your Snack Fits Into Your Daily Allowance

Not everyone likes to count calories on a ketogenic diet. However, some may find it a helpful guideline to follow, especially if they are trying to loose weight. Your daily calorie intake will be dependent on your age, gender, body type and lifestyle. So it's important to determine your individual allowance to keep your body sufficiently fuelled, without going overboard.

On the back of your chosen snack you will find the calories listed per 100g. To find out the calories per serving, take a look at the portion size and work it out as a percentage of 100. So, if 100g has 170 calories and the portion is 40g, your snack will be 68 calories per serving.

Jotting down what you eat can also be a helpful way of keeping track of your intake, especially if you are just starting out on the keto diet or you are not achieving your goals. Food diary apps are really easy to use and will track calories, fat, carbs and protein to make sure you are hitting your macros each day.

What Is a Ketogenic Diet?

What Is a Ketogenic Diet?

A ketogenic diet is a studied method that's been proven to be effective for both weight loss and in lowering the risk of certain diseases. The diet involves reducing carbohydrate consumption and increasing fat intake to put your body into a metabolic state called ketosis.

When in ketosis, your body becomes more efficient at burning fat and turns fat in the liver into ketones, which supply energy to the brain. This has also been shown to lower blood sugar and insulin levels, which may be helpful in the management of diabetes.

A standard keto diet divides your daily intake up into a ratio of 60% fat, 35% protein and 5% carbs. However, this balance can be altered depending on what works for you. Aside from the standard ketogenic diet (SKD), you may prefer to try a high-protein ketogenic diet (HPKD), or the targeted ketogenic diet (TKD) which allows for higher carb intake around workouts.

"Remember that 'cheat days' don't fit in with how the keto diet works! If you take a day off then your body will switch back to burning carbs and you will need to burn through all those carbs before it can start working again."
