Top 10 Best Essential Oils in the UK 2021 (Tisserand Aromatherapy, Neom Organics London, and More)

Essential oils are natural liquids that are extracted from plants, and they've been used by humans since Ancient Egyptian times! They have many benefits for our well-being, uplifting or caressing when needed. Lavender helps you to sleep better and ylang ylang reduces anxiety, while zesty citrus oils like orange and lemon can boost your mood. Diluted healing oils such as tea tree when applied topically may also help with skin issues like blemishes or acne.

To help you choose the right essential oil for your needs, we've put together a buying guide with all the info you need to know. Plus, we've compiled a list of our favourite products including pure oils, unique blends, and gorgeous gift sets from brands like Naissance, Tisserand Aromatherapy, and Neom Organics London. Read on to learn more!

How to Choose an Essential Oil in the UK – Buying Guide

There are so many different types of essential oils around, making it hard to know where to start! Our buying guide will explain all about pure vs blended oils, which properties certain oils have, and how to apply oils to your skin without causing irritation.

Decide Between Pure Oils and Blended Formulas

Decide Between Pure Oils and Blended Formulas

Unsure whether to go for a pure oil or a blend of a few different ones? It all depends on your personal taste. Essential oils can be intense even when they are used standalone, so it is a good idea to understand how different types of fragrances can affect your physical mood and wellbeing.

Pure essential oils are simple and only contain one type of oil. Using this kind of product alone allows you to fully enjoy the fragrance of a single oil without the interference of other scents. Sometimes, inhaling too many aromas at once can be stressful on the senses!

Decide Between Pure Oils and Blended Formulas

Blended formulas, on the other hand, have been put together by a fragrance expert and are usually intended to have a specific effect. For example, a 'de-stress' blend will contain a combination of oils that are known to help the body to relax. Whereas a 'pumpkin spice' blend will contain scents that work together harmoniously to create an autumnal aroma.

If you're feeling creative, you could even make your own blend by mixing your favourite pure essential oils together! Creating your own blend of essential oils is also a form of relaxation in itself and really stimulates your mind and body, so it is a strong recommendation from us!

Pick an Essential Oil With Properties That'll Benefit You

Each essential oil has its own unique properties, and you may desire one with a specific effect. Here, we'll explain which oils to go for if you're feeling stressed, tired, or simply in need of comfort.

Floral Oils Like Lavender, Jasmine, and Ylang Ylang Will Help You to Relax

Floral Oils Like Lavender, Jasmine, and Ylang Ylang Will Help You to Relax

Need to unwind after a long, stressful day? Many people swear by lavender when it comes to relaxing and getting a good night's sleep. Add a few drops of this floral oil to your bath and we guarantee you'll be snoozing in no time!

Similarly, sweet-smelling jasmine stimulates the central nervous system and reduces symptoms of fatigue, allowing you to doze off easily. Ylang ylang is another floral oil with calming properties. It's been proven to lower blood pressure and decrease the heart rate, which helps to alleviate anxiety and generally make you feel more serene.

Need a Mood Booster? Try Uplifting Citrus or Herb-Based Scents

Need a Mood Booster? Try Uplifting Citrus or Herb-Based Scents

If you're feeling down or tired, try a citrus-based oil. Orange, lemon, and citronella are all naturally uplifting and will provide you with the mental clarity you need to get through the day. Citronella also naturally repels insects like mosquitos, which is always a bonus!

Herbaceous oils such as clary sage, black pepper, and peppermint are proven mood-boosters too. They have refreshing scents that will instantly make you feel more optimistic and energised. Peppermint can also help you to breathe more deeply and clearly, so it's perfect if you have a blocked nose!

Tea Tree and Geranium Can Calm Skin and Banish Blemishes

Tea Tree and Geranium Can Calm Skin and Banish Blemishes

Those with acne will probably already know that tea tree oil can be a lifesaver! But did you know that its anti-bacterial properties mean it can get rid of dandruff and fungal infections too? We'll explain more later about how to dilute this type of oil and use on your skin to clear up any issues.

Anti-inflammatory geranium is another beneficial ingredient for skin. It can be used to combat blemishes and soothe redness. Plus, when used regularly, it balances oil production and evens out your skin tone.

Spices Like Cinnamon, Clove Leaf, and Nutmeg Have a Comforting Effect

Spices Like Cinnamon, Clove Leaf, and Nutmeg Have a Comforting Effect

Lastly, some essential oils may not have specific health benefits, but they're amazing at providing comfort. Spicy aromas like cinnamon, clove leaf, and nutmeg are ideal for chilly autumn nights - they'll make even the coldest room feel warm and inviting!

Direct Application Can Cause Irritation, So Use a Diffuser or Dilute Your Oils

Direct Application Can Cause Irritation, So Use a Diffuser or Dilute Your Oils

Many essential oils, especially undiluted ones, can irritate your skin. With this in mind, we advise against directly applying essential oils to your face or body. Instead, we recommend using a diffuser or diluting them with water or oil.

If you just want to inhale the aroma of essential oils rather than using them topically, pop a few drops of your chosen scent into a diffuser along with some water. This will create a fine mist that you can safely breathe in and enjoy. Or, of course, you can add some oil to your bath water for a super relaxing soak!

Direct Application Can Cause Irritation, So Use a Diffuser or Dilute Your Oils

To use an essential oil on your skin, dilute it with a carrier oil such as jojoba oil or mix some into your daily moisturiser. It's best to use the 1% dilution rule - this means you should add 3 drops of essential oils for every 10ml of carrier oil or cream. If you do experience any irritation though, wash off the product immediately and contact your GP if needed.

Conveniently, some oils (especially those in a rollerball format) have already been combined with a carrier oil - so they're ready to go! Pick up one of these if you like to use aromatherapy while commuting or travelling.
