It’s that time of year again! From frosty walks in urban parks or night-time city strolls to hardcore treks over mountain peaks – women’s winter boots can be cute and stylish or all-terrain workhorses. And, sometimes, even a little bit of both. With so many styles available though, how can you tell what makes a great winter boot for a modern woman?
Hopefully, our short guide, and brilliant top 10 list from brands like Timberland and Barbour will help you discover what you need from a perfect pair of winter boots. Read on to find the best seasonal outfitting for your feet that will keep you looking good in warmth and comfort, whatever you choose to do in them!
A recommendation service that carefully researches each product and consults with experts across many disciplines. We are constantly creating new content to provide the best shopping experience from choosing ‘cosmetics’ to ‘food and drink’, ‘home appliances’ to ‘kids and baby’ products, reaching users all across the United Kingdom.

Whether you want a stylish winter boot for city strolls or a durable stomper for long, cold and – let’s face it, this is Britain – probably wet hikes, this part of the guide will explain what you need to know to find the perfect pair of boots for you.
The kind of women’s winter boots you might wear on a night out to a city centre pub or theatre will (hopefully) look quite different to the ones you might wear on a winter walk in Snowdonia. This is not to say that fashionable boots can't offer some durability and walking potential, or that practical boots can't look good – but generally they're different.
Before you choose a boot it’s good to know what you’re looking for. A pair of practical winter boots might not look as fashionable, but they will keep you warm and offer walking support over rough ground.
On the other hand, a bang on-trend thigh-high supple leather winter boot won’t be so useful on a long hike, but it will keep you looking fierce over shorter, easier walks.
Or, you might be looking for a bit of both. Some of the biggest outdoor brands have come up with great-looking winter boots for women that look fashionable whilst also faring well on winter walks or hikes.
Once you know what kind of boot you want you can look more into the features. For fashionable boots, aesthetic concerns like branding, heels and overall look are the most important features. For more practical winter boots, you'll want to see good waterproofing, ankle support and durability. This section should explain exactly what to look out for in each case!
Chunky synthetics, almost wellington-looking boots and thigh-highs are what’s hot this year. Other than that, trainers are generally the more fashionable look than boots right now so we've included a few trainer-like boots in our top 10.
Some low-key heels can also help give a little height to the more petite women out there – but don't go too risky during winter conditions!
As usual, black is the colour of choice for the fashion-conscious woman in the UK today, but burgundy and other muted splashes of autumnal colours are also seeing wear too. Outside of high fashion, chunky tan or brown winter boots are a popular choice for social media pictures, and will give you some wear in the years to come, too.
For ultimate comfort, look for textile options with comfortable, warm linings and cushioned soles. Ankle support is also a key for comfortable walking, especially for older women or those with foot concerns.
If comfort is your main concern, big-heeled options probably won’t be for you either. Mainly synthetic boots are flexible and provide good support.
Many might prefer the style and durability of leather, but bear in mind that it may take you quite a few outings to mould them to your feet. In the longterm, however, they will stick with you for many a year.
Essentially, the more serious your outdoor walking activities are, the thicker and heavier the boot you’ll want.
Flexible, lightweight winter boots are great for icy city pavements or light hill walks over uneven ground. But if you’re planning to sometimes take actual hikes in your new boots, then a heavier, more durable boot should be your go-to. Either way, it pays to look for fairly good grip or tread.
If you know your new boots will get wet on the regs, such as on the daily countryside dog walk in the snow, make sure to look for claims of proper waterproofing, or at least water-resistance.
If you’ve got sweaty feet, there are options for you too. Many winter boots for women feature breathable fabrics and other technical wizardry to keep your feet dry, whether you're battling the elements or your own skin.
Lastly, the one material you want to avoid is all-over suede. If you’re only going to be city walking, or only bits of the uppers are suede, maybe. However, suede is not the best material to get wet or muddy as it is extremely difficult to clean. An alternative is nubuck leather, which is treated to give a suede-like effect but is a lot more durable.

The Serena is a winter version of the absolutely iconic British-made Doc Marten boot silhouette. These fur-lined beauties have been a wardrobe staple on British shores for over 60 years.
They feature the standard Doc Marten's premium burnished leather, and the trademark Doc branded heel loop. However, The Serena also adds in faux-fur lining for warmth and a slip-resistant cushioned sole for all-terrain winter walking. No matter what you wear them with, they're truly a boot for all occasions!
Legendary outdoor brand The North Face has to have been one of the most recognisable fashion brands in the UK over recent years. They've gone from Granddad swag to being an absolute must-have in many a hip women’s winter wardrobe in just a few years.
The North Face Berkley Redux look absolutely fantastic, like a fashionable pair of Vans skate shoes turned into a warm winter boot. They come equipped with gorgeous and waterproof suede parts to the uppers and a super-comfortable but breathable inner lining – plus all that lovely NF branding. Aren't they beautiful?
Barbour is the only manufacturer on this list with a Royal Warrant, originally supplied in 1974 but since renewed several times. These classic riding boot-style thigh-highs will be as at home tramping round a country estate as they are on a wet Chelsea pavement.
Comfort-wise, there's a luxurious cotton lining and a surprisingly good grip for a pair of fashion boots. The elegant and sophisticated design may not be suitable for mountain hikes, but when you look this good will you really mind?
Newcastle-based Berghaus (German for Mountain House) have been making premium outdoor apparel since 1972. An extremely practical look, the Expeditor Ridge 2.0 is one tough lover of a women's winter boot.
They could easily last you 5 or even 10 years of heavy use. That's some value, even before you consider all the breathable and waterproof tech that's gone into them. From their opti-stud sole grips for extreme conditions to the shock absorbing midsoles, these boots are perfect for any outdoorsy women out there.
Gabor is a prestigious German brand that first started making women's shoes and boots in 1949. This premium black or brown leather boot with textile inners can be fastened by the side zip, or the full-length laces for a more theatrical outfit.
They've also got an adjustable fitting for all kinds of legs, and a loop-pull at the back for a smooth experience taking them off. A wide size range from UK 3-8 is an added bonus, too. Apart from all that, though, just look at them!
Feel like your favourite rapper with this classic winter boot silhouette from Timberland. These beauties add a layer of waxed nubuck leather to the iconic Timberland boot format, as well as completely waterproof seams.
They might not be the best boots for a long mountain hike in muddy winter conditions. However, they're ever popular among fashion followers and they are durable enough for long walks in the snow or urban environments – their soles are even antimicrobial to limit sweating and odour.
One of the shorter options on our list, the simple chunky design of Columbia's Heavenly Shorty is a nice traditional winter boot style. The faux-fur lining will keep you nice and warm while the breathable textile webbing stops it trapping too much heat.
Though they aren't as robust as some leather pairs, the grooved synthetic sole will give you traction and stability in a range of walking environments. They also have a contoured footbed that you can swap out, depending on what suits your feet. Easy!
If you’ve ever wanted some truly out-there fashionista moon boots for your winter excursions, the UGG Montara’s might be a good shout. Available in black or white, they definitely look a bit different, however, they’re probably the warmest set of boots on this list.
These “puffer jackets in boot form” are perfect for urban snowy walks, with 200 grams of insulation, UGG's wool lining and other tech to keep your feet nice and snug – even during days of -20 degrees or less.
These UK-made boots don’t make any concession to fashion. In fact, they look more military in style than what you would normally think of as "women's" boots.
Still, they’re highly durable, heavily waterproof and have a multidirectional sole for maximum grip on rough trails. The leather, mixed with synthetic inners, makes for a fairly “hard” boot for casual walks. However, for a woman who needs rugged all-terrain boots for under £100, you can’t go too wrong.
Sorel have also been making winter boots since the 1960s, straight out of Ontario, Canada. Their latest Slimpack line is designed to have a a slimmer, more fashionable feel, so you might want to buy a size up on your usual, especially if you have wider feet.
However, your wintry needs should still be met by these part-leather part-synthetic boots with micro-fleeced wool lining. They might not stand up to the most rugged of walks, but the smart design will keep you warm in most conditions and the ridged heel is totally cute too.
