How to Choose Baked Beans in the UK - Buying Guide

Before choosing a tin of baked beans, you'll want to think about a few things. In this section, we'll quickly run through the different options available and the nutritional benefits of each type, to help you to make the right choice!

Consider the Container Size - Do You Need a Single Tin or a Family-Size Multipack?

Consider the Container Size - Do You Need a Single Tin or a Family-Size Multipack?

The most popular container size for baked beans is, of course, the trusty single tin which is usually around 390 - 410 grams. This is generally the perfect size for those who simply want a quick snack or meal for themselves.

If you have a small appetite though, consider a smaller can of around 200g. As this will contain exactly the right amount of beans to fit onto a jacket potato, and you won't need to worry about storing excess food in the fridge.

For families or shared households that eat together, it can be more cost-effective to buy a multipack of tins, depending on how often you consume baked beans. Alternatively, you could go for a fridge pack, which is a resealable container, to save space in your cupboards.

Choosing the right size for your household truly comes down to your needs and consumption. The beauty of baked beans is that the majority of options come in a sealed tin can and have a long shelf life, and so you can undoubtedly buy in bulk!

It’s always handy to have a few different options of cans, such as the single size and larger size, depending on what you’re planning on using them with.

Nutritional Benefits Can Vary From Tin to Tin

Baked beans are generally a wholesome and healthy choice, since they're packed full of protein, but their health benefits can vary depending on the brand. Read on for the lowdown on getting those nutrients!

Be Sure to Check the Sugar and Salt Content

Be Sure to Check the Sugar and Salt Content

Although baked beans are generally good for you because they're high in fibre and protein and low in fat, some brands contain more sugar and salt than others.

It's recommended that adults have no more than 30g of sugar a day, but the amount of sugar in a tin can vary from 5.5g to 12g. Opting for a can with around 8.8g of sugar should provide enough tastiness without going overboard.

Similarly, 6g is the recommended daily limit for salt, so try to go for a tin containing no more than a gram of salt where possible.

Because of the long shelf life of baked beans, many options tend to have added sugar and salt. Eating a diet low in sugar is imperative to good health, as overeating refined sugar leads to weight gain, increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, and even increased cancer risk.

So finding ways to minimise your sugar intent is crucial, and luckily many popular foods like baked beans have lower sugar options.

Beans With Reduced Sugar Often Contain Artificial Sweeteners

Beans With Reduced Sugar Often Contain Artificial Sweeteners

If you're watching your weight or just trying to live a more healthy lifestyle, it can be tempting to choose baked beans labelled as having "reduced sugar". This typically means that natural sugar has been replaced with an artificial sweetener.

So, these "healthier" baked beans contain both sugar and sweetener, but are they better for you? Often, the answer is no! This substitution doesn't create much of a difference calorie-wise and it's thought that the use of artificial sweeteners may actually have a stimulating effect on our appetite, leading to weight gain and obesity.

Nutritionist

Artificial sweeteners are commonly used when sugar is taken out of products to keep their sweet taste. All sweeteners are not created equal, as some are artificially manufactured, and some are all natural, like Stevia.

Reading the ingredients of reduced sugar baked beans is essential, and the beans should either be used with Stevia or be listed near the end of the ingredient list (if at all). When ingredients are listed at the end of the list, they have smaller amounts in the product because they are always listed from the largest quantity to the smallest.

Have Some Fun With Flavours and Textures

Have Some Fun With Flavours and Textures

It used to be that there was only one type of baked beans, made from haricot beans, which made them a somewhat boring meal choice. Luckily, these days that's not the case at all!

Some cans contain a variety of pulses, packing as many plant-based nutrients in as possible. Or you can go for the good old combo of beans and sausages if you fancy a hearty meal with a bit more texture.

Want something a bit different flavour-wise? Instead of a tomato sauce, try barbecue beans for a unique smoky snack, or add them to a bigger dish such as a stew.

Baked beans have far surpassed the standard ‘beans on toast’ classification that they used to fall into, which means that they have become much more versatile. Try adding baked beans to healthy recipes like vegetarian stews, or add chicken and turkey sausages for a more nutritious option rather than cumberland sausages.

Scan the Ingredients List if You Have Specific Dietary Needs

Scan the Ingredients List if You Have Specific Dietary Needs

Flavourful and filling, baked beans make a great meal or snack for omnivores and veggies alike. However, not all cans are suitable for those on a plant-based or wheat-free diet, so it's always a good idea to scan the ingredients list before you buy.

Obviously, a tin of beans with pork sausages are a no-no for veggies, but meat-free sausages can have unexpected ingredients too. If you're a vegan or lacto-vegetarian, watch out for veggie sausages containing egg whites. In addition, wheat can be found in some cans of beans, making them unsuitable for those on a gluten-free diet.

Although baked beans may seem like they would be free from many allergens, many can contain sneaky ingredients. Wheat especially can be found in many of the ingredients and preservatives added to baked beans.

Many trace ingredients can also be found due to cross-contamination in baked beans production, so reading the label of all products is very important.

Recipe: Sausage and Baked Bean Casserole

Recipe: Sausage and Baked Bean Casserole

If you're a lover of beans but you're bored of the monotony of having beans on toast or a jacket potato and beans, then we've got something to spice up your bean game! Why not have a go at making this mouth-watering bean casserole as a midweek mixup? And you can easily adapt this recipe to various dietary requirements too.

1. Heat the oil over a high heat in a large casserole dish and add the sausages. Brown all over, then lift out on to a plate.

2. Add the onion and mushrooms to the empty casserole and fry for 5min or until golden and just beginning to soften. Stir in the garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and tomato puree and cook for 30sec.

3. Return the sausages to the pan, then pour in the stock. Bring to the boil, then simmer over a medium heat, stirring occasionally, for 20min, or until the liquid is thick and reduced.

4. Stir in the beans and cook for a few more min to heat through. Season to taste. Stir through the parsley and serve with crusty bread.
