Manufacturers are making cars larger and larger, as the demand for more spacious vehicles has increased. However, car parking spaces don’t seem to be getting any bigger, and with the traffic in towns increasing, as well as the demand for limited parking, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and try and squeeze your car into the first space that becomes available!
If your car isn’t already fitted with one, then buying a reversing camera kit is sure to make parking your vehicle that much easier. We’ve pulled together a handy buying guide along with our top 10 ranking list of the best reversing cameras to buy in the UK. Whether you want something to attach to your rear view mirror, or a Bluetooth enabled mounted camera with a screen read on for our favourites on Amazon and eBay to help make parking that bit more straight forward.
A recommendation service that carefully researches each product and consults with experts across many disciplines. We are constantly creating new content to provide the best shopping experience from choosing ‘cosmetics’ to ‘food and drink’, ‘home appliances’ to ‘kids and baby’ products, reaching users all across the United Kingdom.
There are quite a few different reversing cameras available to buy online. So it’s important that you do your research and consider each option before you decide. To make it a bit easier, we’ve covered the main points in our buying guide to help you find the right one!
Rear view mirror mounted are the easiest to install. You pop it over the top of your rear view mirror and the integrated screen gives you your reversing display These cameras will work with pretty much any car and can cut down the amount of clutter on your dash.
Some cameras work with your car’s existing touch screen. These connect either via a cable or Bluetooth signal and can be a bit more complicated to install, as you'll need to ensure the model is compatible. Similarly, some cameras connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth, so you use your phone as the display.
If you’ve got specific things in mind that you’d like your reversing camera to have, or be able to do, then it’s worth checking the different features available. Who knows, maybe you’ll discover something you didn’t know you needed, but can’t live without!
Many reversing cameras provide onscreen parking lines. These are virtual guidelines superimposed onto the camera image that show you where you are in relation to any obstacles, to help you park more confidently.
On some models these can be turned on and off, or can be adjusted to suit your particular situation. These really are an indispensable tool to quickly and safely reverse your car.
If you’ve got your rear view mirror and your reversing camera both in your line of sight, reversing can cause your brain to become confused. This is because one is a mirror image, and the other isn’t!
To make it easier for your brain to process, the “mirror image” feature will flip the image so that your reversing camera is in the same orientation as your rear view mirror.
A reversing camera is designed to allow you to see more clearly while you’re backing up your car. So it makes sense that you would want to be able to see a much as possible! The camera's field of vision is given in degrees. The higher the number of degrees, the more you’ll be able to see in the camera.
We recommend choosing a camera with a minimum 120° FOV. If you require a wider angle, perhaps for for parallel parking on a busy street, you might prefer an FOV of 150° or even 170°.
You’re going to need a reversing camera at night just as much as you will during the day – maybe even more so! To make sure that you’re not going to be left in the dark, check that your chosen reversing camera can deal with low light situations.
The camera itself will need to be mounted somewhere on the exterior of your car. Luckily, there’s a few different to do this. Mounting the camera under your registration plate means it is fairly well hidden and won't stick out like a sore thumb. Plus, you've got the whole area under the sill to position the camera exactly where you'd like it, while avoiding the worst of the rain and any spray.
Bracket mounted cameras come with their own bracket and screws, so you can decide exactly where on your vehicle you want to position the camera. This gives you much more freedom to place the camera somewhere that works well for you, and you don't mind leaving holes for the screws. Unfortunately, they aren't as seamless looking as they tend to be a bit bulkier.
Cameras with magnetic mounts are the quickest way to install a reversing camera. You simply need to attach the camera somewhere metallic. It's incredibly straight forward and can easily be repositioned if required.

This mirror mounted camera from PORMIDO gives you an extra-wide viewing angle that eliminates the blind spots that a normal rear view mirror would miss. Coupled with a front view camera, this truly gives a 360° view of your car. This kit also includes a wire so that you can connect the camera to automatically turn on whenever you put the car in reverse, for a seamless user experience.
The camera itself is small and unobtrusive, and you can add up to 128 GB of storage via an SD card. It's simple to use with a 1 year warranty and lifetime tech support, which is why it made our number 1 spot!
This large screen camera system from TOGUARD is designed for heavy usage, making it suitable for trucks and coaches, as well as your family car. It has the option of 2 video outputs, so you can install an additional screen should you require front or side views of your vehicle.
Once installed this camera system works reliably with excellent picture quality. Should you have the expertise, you can even hardwire it into your car's fuse box for power. Overall, it feels solid and is robust enough to withstand many hours on the road.
This camera system is fitted directly onto your registration plate and connects wirelessly to a monitor that can be mounted on your dashboard using the 360° rotating holder. Unlike most wireless cameras, this one is solar powered. It needs just 20-30 minutes of daily sun exposure to run and only requires full charging once a year!
Annoyingly, the manufacturer doesn't state the field of view, so it's difficult to know how this measures up against other cameras. That aside, the system is really easy to fit and the camera is fully adjustable to find an angle that suits your vehicle.
This camera system from TOGUARD features a responsive touch screen and up to 5 minute recording loop from both cameras, so you can be totally sure that you have everything on film in the event of an accident.
For added peace of mind, if a vehicle collision or rapid acceleration-deceleration occurs, the cameras will automatically record what's happening around the vehicle and store the footage so it can't be recorded over.
This camera system from BOSCAM has fantastic night vision when compared to its competitors, with a wide camera angle ensuring that you get a good field of vision when reversing your vehicle. The supplied 4.3" screen is clear and comes with a strong suction mount, so you can position it wherever works best for you.
Where this camera falls short is the instructions. They are very vague and make this camera less than straight forward to install - a real shame, as this is otherwise a top buy.
This camera features a 5" touchscreen that's mounted on your rear view mirror, with a front facing lens that also captures a 170° FOV from the front of your vehicle. This allows you to record a 1, 3, or 5 minute loop to an SD card, so you can provide video evidence of any incidents that may occur, giving you extra protection.
That said, you may be disappointed as the dash cam is designed for left hand drive cars. That means the footage may be obscured slightly. The screen can also be a bit too dark, especially at night, which may affect how useful it is.
This camera only system from POMILE uses a fish eye lens to give you a wider viewing angle. It's particularly good in low light settings and will continue to deliver a high resolution picture of your surroundings. Best of all, the camera is so tough you can even leave it in place when using a car wash.
This camera connects to the screen on your dash, so it's imperative that you check it's compatible with your car before you buy it. And while the fish eye lens is great, some find it can affect your judgement of how far obstructions are from your vehicle.
This system from Pathson includes two cameras that you can switch between. This gives you much more flexibility in how you set up the viewing area behind your vehicle. For driving at night and in low light conditions, these cameras also feature infra-red technology that lets you see up to 15 metres.
Unfortunately, there are instances of these cameras arriving without instructions, especially frustrating seeing as they are not the most straight forward to install.
This reversing camera and screen from OBEST are relatively easy to install, with a wide viewing angle that's sure to give you a fantastic field of vision whilst backing up your vehicle. The 4.3" screen automatically boots up when needed, and is a good size for a clear picture, without cluttering up your dashboard too much.
However, the screen can produce a flickery image, rather than a stable one, which can make using it more difficult. Further, the connection between the camera and the screen can be intermittent.
This camera from Aeo connects directly to your smartphone via an app, allowing you to receive the image wirelessly. Its strong magnetic base holds the camera in place on your car, with a single charge lasting up to 8 hours.
While this is a great idea in principle, the connection between the camera and the phone can be intermittent - which can become very frustrating. The camera itself is also quite bulky and can look unsightly on your car. Therefore, it would be best for occasional use, for example, when towing a trailer.
Reversing cameras are often confused with dash cameras. Although they both use outwardly facing cameras, they each perform an entirely different function.
Dash cameras, also known as dash cams, record out the front of your vehicle. These are used to record video while you’re driving, so that if you are involved in an incident you can use the footage as evidence of what occurred.
Reversing cameras face out the rear of your vehicle and don’t record any footage. They are purely an aid to help provide a clear view of what’s behind you as you perform any kind of reversing manoeuvre.
If you spend a lot of your time on the road, be that as part of your line or work or your regular commute, having the right gadgets to hand can make driving a much more pleasant experience. If you put in the miles on a regular basis, have a look at some of these recommended car products to make hitting the road that bit easier!

So if you're regularly trying to squeeze your car back into the garage, we hope this article has helped you decide on the right reversing camera to make driving that little bit less stressful. Happy driving!
