How to Choose a Bass Amp in the UK – Buying Guide

In this section, we’ll cover all the most important features that you’ll need to consider when choosing a bass amp. As well as recommending which ones are best suited to particular playing styles and situations, we’ll touch on some classic debates within the bass community, and other well-known issues that are seemingly unavoidable.

Tube vs. Solid-State - Weigh up the Pros and Cons

Tube vs. Solid-State - Weigh up the Pros and Cons

The first port of call is determining whether you want a solid-state or a tube (sometimes called valve) amplifier. Without getting into too much detail, the difference is that a solid-state uses transistor for amplification and the tube uses, well, vacuum tubes.

What does this mean for you? Well, solid-state amps are the most common option for bass players as they’re more affordable and robust. Where they falter is the sound quality, especially when you’ve cranked it up loud. This causes the distortion, and not the cool kind. Luckily, most are built with enough headroom to avoid this happening.

Tube amps, on the other hand, produce a nice warm and pleasing overdrive, which is why they’re often the choice of tone fanatics. The issue is they’re expensive, heavy, fragile and they’ll need more care as the tubes will need replacing about once a year.

How Big Do You Really Need to Go?

How Big Do You Really Need to Go?

Next up you’ll want to think about whether you would like an all-in-one combo, or a separate head and cabinet. The chances are that most people reading this will be playing in band rooms and small to medium-sized venues, so a combo will be just fine.

Head and cabinet setups are best for people playing in larger venues. This is because the heads tend to have higher power output (we’ll touch on this more later). This travels through a larger cabinet, producing a louder sound. The only issue with these is that you'll need to buy both separately, increasing the cost. Plus, bass cabinets are renowned for being cumbersome.

In this article, we’ll be focussing on bass combos and bass heads only, so you won't find any cabinets in our ranking. Just remember, if you are considering purchasing a bass head, then you’ll need a cabinet to work alongside it!

The Size of Speakers Will Affect the Sound

The Size of Speakers Will Affect the Sound

If you’re looking to purchase a head, you can skip over this section, but for combos read on! We won’t be going into too much detail as there are 100s of different speakers, each with it's own distinct flavour. However, it is important to check the size of the speakers prior to buying.

When it comes to bass amps, you usually have the option of 8”, 10”, 12” or 15” speakers. The smaller the speaker size, the tighter and punchier the sound will be, although you won’t get much of a low rumble. If you want that bass-heavy, belly-wobbling growl, then look for an amp that has a larger size, or higher number of speakers.

Check You Have Watt You Need

Check You Have Watt You Need

When it comes to power, it’s worth remembering that low-end frequencies, such as the ones you’re trying to produce with your bass, require a lot. If you’re looking to play alongside other musicians, we would recommend at the very least a 100 – 150 W amp

If you have the budget, then ideally you should look for something a little bigger, preferably between 200 – 400 W. This will produce the same tones, but with a lot less stress on the speakers. Alternatively, if you’re looking for something to practice with, then there are options as low as 15 W that will still work brilliantly.

Consider the Weight as This Will Determine the Amp's Portability

Consider the Weight as This Will Determine the Amp's Portability

If you’re looking for a practice amp that isn’t going to be moved around much, then this won’t be much of an issue for you. However, if you’re looking to get out and about and play some gigs, then the weight can be the deciding factor as to whether you play that venue with three flights of stairs or not.

Thankfully, amps are generally becoming lighter and lighter. If you opt for a solid-state combo, this will likely be the lightest option, weighing in around 10 – 30 kg. A tube head can be both heavy or light, ranging anywhere from 3 to 18 kg or more.

If you choose a separate head, you need to remember that it won’t be the only part of your set up! Regardless of the weight of the amp itself, you’ll still need to lug the cabinet wherever you go, so the combined weight will certainly be higher.
