Soft-covered boxes or bags are typically made from fabric or plastic vinyl, making them more flexible for squeezing in winter duvets, heavy coats, and bulky jumpers. As these containers are generally designed to be filled with fabrics, they tend not to hold their shape when empty - this makes them easy to fold away and store when not in use.
Hard-covered boxes are sturdy and usually made from plastic, wood, or wicker. This type of storage container is perfect for tidying away toys in a child’s bedroom or for storing bags and shoes that don’t quite fit in your wardrobe.
As hard-covered boxes don't lose their shape, you can easily stack them if needed. Boxes made from plastic also tend to be waterproof, making them a good option for stashing away cleaning supplies or other liquids.

Another factor worth considering is the accessibility of what you are storing - are you putting away your summer clothes for the many winter months, or will you be taking things out every day? If your answer is the latter, it might be worth investing in storage with more than one compartment.
Multiple compartments allow you to organise your items and keep some things separate if required. Options can range from simple fabric dividers to containers with layouts that can be re-arranged to suit your needs. However, the downside of compartments is that the dividers can actually take up space themselves, which could prevent larger items from fitting into the storage container.
Having the ability to roll out your under bed storage container can be incredibly convenient, especially if you use it on a daily basis. If you're using a container with wheels on carpeted flooring, there should be no issues.
Unfortunately, though, wheels can create scratches on wooden or laminate flooring, especially if there are heavy items in the container. So, take extra care if you’re planning on storing anything heavy on a floor without a carpet.

Under bed storage boxes come in a variety of different designs, many of which are aesthetically pleasing as well as space-saving. Transparent containers aren't the most stylish option, but they're popular because they make it simpler to see what's inside.
A clear box or bag makes it easy to locate a particular dress or t-shirt without having to mess up the rest of your carefully organised clothes by searching through the whole container. Kids may also prefer a see-through container so they can spot their favourite toy quickly!
On the other hand, you might not want your assortment of socks and underpants in clear view to whoever enters the room. If you'd rather keep items hidden away, you might prefer a tasteful wicker chest over a transparent container.

If you’re lucky enough to have some extra clearance space under your bed, you may be tempted to stack containers on top of each other. While this is possible, check that nothing is pushing up against the mattress or frame slats and make sure you leave some space between your bed and the storage boxes/bags. If not, damage could be caused to the containers, the items within, the bedframe itself, or the mattress.
Even soft-cased containers can cause the mattress to become uneven, which could cause back issues and affect your quality of sleep. We'd therefore say it's more important to ensure that the width and length under your bed are used effectively, rather than the height.
