How to Choose a Complete Skateboard for Kids in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. Find a Board With a Deck Width That’s Age-Appropriate
  2. Choose a Deck Length That Suits Their Height
  3. Choose 7 Ply Canadian or North American Maple for Durability
  4. Seek Out a Board With ABEC 3-7 Bearings for a Smooth Ride
  5. Polyurethane Wheels and Aluminium Trucks Are the Best Choice for Kids’ Boards
  6. Cruiser Skateboards Are Perfect for Absolute Beginners
1

Choose a 7.3” Wide Deck for Kids Under the Age of 12, Or 6.5” - 6.75” for Those Under 5

Choose a 7.3” Wide Deck for Kids Under the Age of 12, Or 6.5” - 6.75” for Those Under 5

The deck of a skateboard is where all the magic happens. With your kids feet firmly planted on a suitable deck, they should be able to improve their skills rapidly, in that annoying way only children can. This is why the width of skateboard is so crucial as it'll influence safety, style and the potential for tricks and flips.

The industry standard width for full-sized skateboards is anything over 7.5 inches. However, these are only going to be suitable for kids aged 12 and over, who are over 5'3" tall with a shoe size of 8 or above. The next size down is a 7.3" deck, these are for kids aged 9-12 who are between 4'5" and 5'2" in height with a 6 or 7 shoe size.

Mini size  7" width decks are best for kids aged 6-8, between 3'5" and 4'4" tall with a shoe size of 3-5. Lastly, micro 6.5" - 6.75" skateboards are ideal for kids under 5 with size 2 feet or under. Obviously these are just general guidelines, but you should be able to get a good idea when it comes to choosing a suitable width board for your child. This will help them to learn tricks without too much board under the feet.

2

Pick a Deck Between 29” - 31” in Length for Kids Under 5 Ft Tall

Pick a Deck Between 29” - 31” in Length for Kids Under 5 Ft Tall

Although not quite as significant a measurement as the width, the length is still an important factor in its own right. Just about every skateboard under the sun will be between 28" and 32" in length. So where does the perfect board for your kid fit within this scale?

31" is one of the most common skateboard deck lengths and is perfect for kids over 4'10" tall. Being a standard industry length for donkeys years, it's been tried, tested and tried again. That's why these completes are certain to suit kids looking to progress in the fine-art of skateboarding.

If they aren't quite knocking on 5 feet tall's door just yet, then skate decks of 29" or 30" in length will get them rolling until they start growing. If your child is still under 4ft then any deck under 29" will be a safe option for taking their first push into the highly contagious skating domain.

3

Opt For 7 Ply Canadian or North American Maple for a Durable Board That Will Last

Opt For 7 Ply Canadian or North American Maple for a Durable Board That Will Last

Skateboard decks are constructed from thin layers of plywood that allow for a lightweight, durable deck with plenty of pop. The number of layers can be a good indicator of the quality of a particular deck. For instance, a deck with 9 layers may seem like a safe option, destined to stand the test of stairs and time. But it's actually seen as an easy way out from using cheap wood.

The industry standard for most skateboards is 7 pieces of ply that equal 10mm in thickness. This will be a telling sign that a skate brand has put trust in their deck's construction. You'll also want to avoid decks made from Chinese maple or Birchwood, instead of the preferred Canadian and North American maple wood.

Canadian and North American maple is widely considered the best wood to use in skateboard decks for its flexible yet incredibly strong construction. This is due to the cold and humid air in which the trees are grown. This unique climate makes the maple trees grow slowly, increasing their impact resistance and making them ideal for hardwearing skateboards.

4

Seek Out a Skateboard With ABEC 3 - 7 Bearings

Seek Out a Skateboard With ABEC 3 - 7 Bearings

Bearings are one of the most important parts to a complete skateboard. The part that allows a skateboards wheels to spin, bearings can be seen as the engine room that produces the speeds that make skating such an inspiring sport for children to want to learn.

Bearings are typically measured in terms of their ABEC rating. Standing for Annular Bearing Engineers' Committee, ABEC is the U.S standard for measuring the accuracy and tolerance of bearings the world over. They run in a scale from 1-9, going up 2 at a time, with 9 being the speediest and 1 being the clunkiest.

You will find bearings tend to sit between 3 and 7 on the ABEC scale, with 7 being seen as a fast and superior bearing, while 3 is ok. Just beware of cheaply made ABEC 3's! You would think slower the better for kids right? But in actual fact you could be setting them up with a board to complete boredom, or even worse, flying straight to A&E if the bearings buckle underneath them.

5

Check for Aluminium Trucks and Polyurethane Wheels

Check for Aluminium Trucks and Polyurethane Wheels

While wheels and trucks are a critical consideration when building a skateboard to suit your kids own style of skating, they are a little less important when buying a complete kids skateboard. This is because brands have already chosen the most appropriate sizing in relation to the decks size, and for kids learning to skateboard.

However, one instantly recognisable variance when looking at wheels is their material. The standard since the 70's is Pu or polyurethane wheels. Although, you will find some budget completes use PVC wheels instead. This is a cheap raw plastic alternative with an immutable density and elasticity, making for some sketchy, slippery skating as the wheels won't grip the ground in the same way.

As far as trucks are concerned, you want a good pair of aluminium trucks that are heavily set and not cheap. You don't necessarily need to spend a fortune for decent hardware on a kids' skateboard, but what you do want to avoid at all costs are plastic trucks. Trucks are the load bearing part of the skateboard and aluminium is undoubtedly superior in strength against plastic.

Consider a Cruiser Skateboard for Kids Just Learning How to Skate

Consider a Cruiser Skateboard for Kids Just Learning How to Skate

Cruisers, mini cruisers and Penny boards are popular with all age groups, but it's the smallest of fry that can really benefit from their easy to use designs. Cruiser boards are a favourable choice for young children as they turn smoothly and have large soft wheels that easily roll over hazardous pieces of debris like pebbles.

You can find plenty of cruiser skateboards that are smaller in size and lightweight, making them more convenient to carry. Many also flip the trend on deck material, opting for plastic over wood. Unfortunately, the heavier wheels and lack of front kicktail on the majority of decks means that they are not designed for tricks or to be used in skateparks

While this won't be a problem for the youngest of kids, once your child starts striving to learn tricks and skate in parks, it's best to get them on a traditional popsicle shaped deck. This will give them the best chance of learning to skate while gaining friends, confidence and a sick repertoire of tricks set to impress.

High Quality Skateboard to Help Kids Learn and Progress

This is a full-sized skateboard intended for kids aged 12 and over. The deck is 8" wide, 31" long and constructed from 7 layers of Canadian maple wood, ensuring that your child will be on a quality skateboard destined to last

The ABEC 7 bearings will provide more than enough speed to give the local skatepark ramps a good working over. Although that does make this complete skateboard more suited to kids with a little previous skating experience who are itching to progress.

7.3 ” Tony Hawk Skateboard for Kids

This mini skateboard from the Tony Hawk signature series is perfect for kids who haven't started their adolescent growth spurt yet. Being 7.3" wide and 28.5" long, it snugly fits into the 9 - 12 year old category.

The bearings are on the slower side with an ABEC rating of 3. However, with the quality being of a decent standard, they should be perfectly adequate to handle whatever your kids throw down.

High-Spec Mini Cruiser That Comes in Three Colours

Here's another skateboard that comes with a choice of three cool colourways. Gonex's mini cruiser is popular, and for good reason! It's a high-grade cruiser that literally any kid over the age of three will find enjoyment on.

With its chunky Pu wheels, it'll roll over just about anything, keeping kids moving and smiling as they cruise the hallways of your home or the streets of the neighbourhood. Just note that it's best to avoid the skatepark entirely with this skateboard, its good for cruising, but terrible for ramps.

This Osprey skateboard is a step in the right direction in terms of quality, breaking down the door for the potential of learning tricks. It's a solid deck, constructed from 5 layers of Chinese maple ply, sandwiched between two additional layers of Canadian maple ply.

Benefiting from ABEC 7 bearings, Pu wheels and aluminium trucks this skateboard is fit to handle the skatepark. Your child can also choose from three striking designs, putting their own stamp of style down on to the concrete.

Short 28“ Deck Designed for Youngsters 5 - 7 Years Old

At 28" in length this board is as short as legitimate skateboards come. Making it ideal for kids aged 5 - 7 who are entering the skateboarding world for the first time. The deck is actually quite wide at 7.87" making for a good solid platform to find their skateboarding feet on.

This does mean that it'll be practically impossible for them to learn tricks on the board, but as an entry-level skateboard it makes a lot of sense. Constructed of 7 ply birch wood with ABEC 3 bearings and Pu wheels, this is a board not necessarily of highest quality, but not a throwaway either.

An Affordable Choice for Your Child’s First Skateboard

Xootz' beginner skateboard comes highly rated on Amazon. The deck is full-sized at 31" in length and 8" in width, making it a suitable option for tweens, or as a teenagers first skateboard

This is a board to learn the basics on and that's about it. It's definitely still in the budget skateboard realm, with PVC wheels, 9 ply maple deck and unknown ABEC rated wheels. With five street-art inspired designs to choose from, it's maybe a skateboard that looks cooler than it'll perform.

Inexpensive Complete for Kids Looking to Try Skateboarding

This is an entry-level skateboard for kids figuring out whether skateboarding is for them. The deck is 7.5" in width, with a 31" length, constructed from 9 layers of Chinese maple ply. It's an affordable option for providing fickle youngsters with a bit of entertainment, but it's a heavy deck made of cheap wood.

Further, the wheels are made of PVC plastic and the bearings are barely on the ABEC scale. This results in a maximum weight limit of 50 kg. So make sure no uncles or aunties fancy showing off their youthful spirit and skateboarding skills on this board.

Tiny 16.5” Skateboard for Kids Ages 3 and Up

This mini skateboard is recommended for kids aged 3 years and up. Being 21.5" long and 6" wide, it's as small a skateboard as you're likely to find. Perfect for kids wanting to roll around the house or driveway.

The manufacturer hasn't given much away in terms of materials, but because the deck is made of plastic, you can assume this won't be the highest quality board. However, this doesn't mean it can't be used by its target audience for learning the feeling of skateboarding for the first time.
