Top 10 Best Exterior Masonry Paints in the UK 2021 (Dulux, Sandtex, and More)

There are many reasons why you may want to consider re-painting the outside of your house - perhaps it's part of the general upkeep and maintenance of your property or maybe you just fancy a different colour. Whatever the reason, when dealing with exterior walls you'll need to use specialist masonry paint to cover any cracks and provide protection against UK weather.

Some brands require re-applying every five years, but a top-quality masonry paint should keep your house or garage protected for up to fifteen years. So, which product is most suitable for the job at hand? We've searched the web and narrowed our list down to the top 10 best paints, including those by Dulux, Sandtex, and Johnstone's. Read on to see our favourites!

Why Should You Use a Masonry Paint?

Why Should You Use a Masonry Paint?

Why should you buy a specialist masonry paint for the exterior walls of your house? Well, it may sound obvious, but masonry paint has been designed for use on brick, concrete, breezeblocks, and stonework. Some formulas react with masonry in order to create a chemical bond and become part of the structure itself, while others contain plastics and silica to provide an insulating, water-resistant layer.

In comparison, regular paints simply aren't suitable - they won’t provide the same weatherproofing and will struggle to even attach themselves to rough brickwork or concrete, being absorbed into the material instead. You may be tempted to use an emulsion or interior paint on outside masonry, but it will quickly flake and wear away.

Why Should You Use a Masonry Paint?

We also wouldn’t recommend using masonry paint to cover a wooden garden fence, but sometimes it can be worth using it in certain situations. For example, if you’re looking to insulate your house, it can be worth coating a wooden window-frame with masonry paint to combat its porous nature.

Wood or other surfaces have to be properly treated beforehand though, otherwise the paint can flake and not attach to the surface correctly. With this in mind, we wouldn't recommend using masonry paint on anything other than what it's designed for - it’s not likely to cause damage but will probably be a waste of paint - and your time!

How to Choose an Exterior Masonry Paint in the UK - Buying Guide

We’re here to guide you through the different exterior masonry paints on the market at the moment. We''ll help you decide how much paint you’ll need, as well as explaining the different types available and what you should look for in terms of weatherproofing. We’ll even throw in a few suggestions about which colours are popular choices!

Measure Your Walls So That You Know How Much Paint You'll Need

Measure Your Walls So That You Know How Much Paint You'll Need

The first thing you'll need to do before repainting an outside wall is to work out roughly how much paint you’ll need. You don’t want to run out of paint when you’re halfway through a job!

The simplest way to ensure that you buy enough is to measure the height and width of the wall and then multiply these numbers together to determine the surface area. For example, a wall measuring 3 x 2 metres gives you a total of 6 metres squared, minus any doors or windows that you won’t be painting over.

Each tin of paint will tell you how much it will cover per litre, so you don’t run out - this is called the coverage rate. Remember, you’ll need enough for at least two coats of paint, so plan accordingly!

Protecting Against the Elements Is Paramount

Protecting Against the Elements Is Paramount

Aside from making your property look great, the main purpose of using masonry paint is to protect walls from the elements. Rain is the most important thing to shield against and as such, nearly all masonry paints will have water-resistant properties. Damp can be a serious concern, causing structural problems to your property and even health issues so the more waterproofing, the better.

Look out for masonry paint that has Microseal technology as this will offer more breathability than other products, allowing moisture that has found its way into the masonry to escape. It also has dirt-resistant properties, meaning that it stays cleaner than other options.

Another useful feature is anti-carbonation technology - this prevents surfaces from decaying due to carbon dioxide. It's particularly handy for those who live in cities, where carbon dioxide levels are higher.

The Size and Quality of the Wall Will Determine Whether You Need Smooth or Textured Paint

The Size and Quality of the Wall Will Determine Whether You Need Smooth or Textured Paint

There are two main types of exterior masonry paint on the market right now: smooth and textured. If you’re looking to paint a large wall, the smooth option is easier to apply to a larger surface area due to its velvety consistency. It tends to be cheaper than a textured alternative too.

Textured paint is better for walls that may require a little extra durability - those that are exposed to a lot of wind for example. It can also cover some small cracks in the surface, so if your wall is looking a bit worse for wear then we'd say that the higher price of textured paint is justified.

An Appealing Colour Can Increase the Value of Your House

An Appealing Colour Can Increase the Value of Your House

It may seem strange, but the colour of your house can have a drastic impact on its curb appeal and, as a result, its overall value. While masonry paint comes in a wide variety of colours, we don’t recommend that you stray too far away from the established norms of creamy white, off-white, and grey if you're planning to re-sell later on. Not sure which shade to go for? Take a look at the surrounding houses in your area for ideas!

You may worry that light colours might be difficult to keep clean but good-quality masonry paints have built-in technology, such as the aforementioned Microseal, in order to keep your property looking its best - whatever the weather. Remember, these are paints designed to protect against the elements for years and years!

Make Sure You're Prepared Before You Start Painting

Make Sure You're Prepared Before You Start Painting

Now that you know which product to choose, you should check the walls that you're planning to work on. It's important to ensure that the surface is smooth and free from cracks in the brick itself or flaking paint.

For especially flaky paint, it's worth applying a primer beforehand to stabilise the surface. Any dampness in the brick can also be an issue, so make sure you’re painting in dry conditions and that the temperature outside is over 8°C so that the paint can dry properly.

We’d recommend using a paint roller when tackling the outside walls of a house to avoid spending too much time up a ladder - this will mean that you're able to cover a large area quickly. For smaller areas and fine details though, a 3 or 4-inch brush will suffice. Just remember to stay safe when dealing with heights and potentially crumbling brickwork!
