The first component that often jumps out to many people about our number one trimmer is its power usage. Incredibly, the tool has a running time of 50 minutes, which is much more than many electrical trimers. Plus, not only can it achieve this, but it does so on just an hour's charging time! 

From there, you have the incredibly flexible shaft length, the low weight and the decent cutting path size. The best bit, however, is that it's also one of the most economical grass trimmers you'll ever come across. The features and value easily place this at the top of our list. 

If you look out of your back window and you see something that more closely resembles an abandoned patch of forest than a garden, you're going to need to call in the big guns. It might be too much for the average garden, but if you're struggling with a substantial workload, this will have your back. 

You might look at this trimmer and think that it's a little odd, and you'd be right, but it's one of those things that people can't quite put their finger on at first. Luckily we're here to tell you – it's the handles. You see, unlike many other trimmers, this employs two separate handles that encourage you to cut more ergonomically. 

Pair this with the fact that they have wonderfully comfortable grips, and you'll find using this machine to be one of the most pleasant and easy trimming experiences you've ever had. It can also be adjusted via a foot pedal, which will twist or lower the handles to help you trim along paths or under garden furniture. 

This trimmer from Worx encourages the user to work smarter, not harder. The tool is another 2-in-1 trimming and edging device that will see you neaten that garden in no time, in large part thanks to its more comprehensive 20 V battery. Usually, trimmers are all 18 V. 

Furthermore, it has a telescopic handle, allowing you to change the length of the device. This feature makes the trimmer more versatile and more comfortable for many different people with a maximum height of 113.2 cm, so if it's not just you sorting out the garden this could be a great choice. 

If you need plenty of power with less weight, then this offering from McCulloch is right up your street. Surprisingly, it weighs only a little more than an electric trimmer, but don't worry, this doesn't affect its strength and it'll still make light work of overgrown and dense grass!

There is a little pay off though, as you have to sacrifice some of the fuel tank capacity to achieve the lower weight. This effect of this lower capacity will vary from garden to garden and what you plan on using the trimmer for, but it's nice to know there are lighter petrol options out there.

Our favourite aspect of this particular Black+Decker model is that you can choose the amount of power, meaning you can increase or drop it down depending on what you're cutting. This not only makes it easier but it conserves battery too. 

Moreover, it also has a large cutting path, so you'll be slicing away more with each move than many other trimmers, and the Trim’n’Edge feature will let you swap between trimming and edging your borders. Again, though telescopic, the length is not provided, which is why it finds itself further down the list. 

This trimmer from Kärcher has a few great features that are worth remembering. Firstly, the shaft length is the longest of all the trimmers in our ranking, so it's probably the best option for those who are 6 ft or over. Secondly, it has a respectable running and charge time, which is always a nice bonus.

In addition, if you have other Kärcher 18V battery products in the shed, you can use the same battery for the whole range. Weighing in at a few kilos, this is one of the heavier options, although we can assume that is to do with the additional height.

This Einhell is the first of our petrol trimmers. Known for having one of the easiest pulley start-up mechanisms, this is a machine that will get going much easier than most. Also, compared to other petrol models it is surprisingly quiet and has minimal vibration, so you should be able to work for longer. 

However, you'll only be able to work as long as the tank capacity allows, as it comes in at a little under 0.5 L. The company also doesn't mention the cutting path of the device, which is a bit of a shame. 

The cutting head on the McGregor allows you to manipulate it to different angles, this means that the tool is perfect for trimming the edges or getting under objects such as bushes or trampolines. There is also a flower safety guard to protect your precious blooms as you trim the grass.

The power provided from the 18 V battery is strong enough for fine or coarse grass, and it should work for up to 30 minutes – this option comes with two batteries, though it is available without for a lower cost. Though adjustable, the length of the device has not been specified, which would make the choice easier for certain different users. 

We may have mentioned in the cutting path segment of our buying guide that they're rarely adjustable, but this Ryobi actually does just that by offering between 23 and 30 cm of width for you to work with. On top of that, this is also one of our lightest trimmers, so it's perfect for those who are smaller in stature. 

However, there is one glaring issue with the trimmer – it doesn't come with either a battery or a charger. This means that you'll need to make additional purchases, which can be both more expensive and a bit of a faff.
