It’s hard to think of an item of clothing that has had a bigger glow-up over the past few years than men’s joggers. From their humble beginnings as a valuable piece of sports kit to now, where sweats are central to many men's wardrobes. In fact, if you have the right pair (and you're brave enough), you might even be able to waltz into a nightclub wearing them!
The silhouette and fit of joggers might have changed in recent years, but the goal is still the same - to keep us comfortable. If you’re looking to stay cosy without looking scruffy, check out our selection of the best pairs available at Amazon, eBay, John Lewis, and ASOS, with products from great brands like Nike, Adidas, and Ralph Lauren. Whether you're after some cheap sweats or a stylish loungewear staple, we'll share our shopping secrets!
While joggers might seem like a straightforward purchase, there are some practical features to consider alongside the aesthetics. In this section, we’ll be looking at the fit, materials, and why you might want to opt for ankle cuffs. Plus, we'll think about pockets and drawstrings.
The first thing to consider is the fit of the joggers. After all, we’ve come a long way from those oversized, marshmallow-looking sweats that were commonplace in rap videos in the 2000s!
The first - and by far the most popular - style that we want to mention is the tapered jogger. These begin to taper from the crotch down, coming to a tighter fit just over the ankle. They're typically a little looser around the crotch and thighs though, so you can still experience the freedom that comes with choosing a pair of joggers over other kinds of trousers.
Next up, you have skinny or slim fit. Unlike tapered joggers, these will taper from the waist down, so you can expect them to be a little more restrictive around the crotch area. That said, many find that this silhouette gives them a smarter look. If you’re looking for something less casual, then a slimmer fit is a great option.
Finally, you have regular or straight fit. These are the most casual of all the options available as they provide the most room around the legs - you shouldn't feel restricted at all! Whilst out of vogue for a while, this style has started to make a comeback with the re-emergence of 90s fashion. Just keep an eye on the length, as they often don't have ankle cuffs so may drag on the ground.
The next part to consider is the material of the joggers, as this will affect the level of comfort. When it comes to this kind of garment, you’re likely to come across two materials that make up the bulk of the fabric: cotton and polyester.
Cotton is known for being soft and breathable, so this fabric is an excellent choice if you plan on wearing your sweatpants around the house rather than out and about. The downside is that this material isn’t very good at holding dye; if you opt for coloured sweats, they could lose their hue over time.
On the other hand, polyester is more robust and resistant to wrinkles or abrasion. Therefore, if you plan on wearing your joggers out into the real world, this fabric will hold up better. Plus, its durability means you can wash your joggers often without worrying about them becoming tatty.
Luckily, many companies use a blend of these two materials when putting together a pair of joggers, meaning that the consumer can get the best of both worlds! However, you'll probably reap the benefits of the material that's more prevalent in the mix.
After thinking about the main material, you should check out extra design features such as whether the joggers have an ankle cuff. With regular fit sweats, this isn’t a typical feature - instead, you’re much more likely to find a traditional hem at the bottom. As we mentioned earlier though, this style is more inclined to drag on the floor, so it might not be the best option for shorter guys.
In the case of the tapered and skinny joggers though, you can expect to find ankle cuffs. These can vary in size, with some being thin and others measuring a couple of inches. Regardless of the size, they'll protect your joggers from hitting the floor, can help to make your trainers pop, and will just generally give you a more tailored look.
Pockets are an essential part of joggers - most pairs will have one on each side which are just the right size for your wallet, keys, and phone. The only question is, will there be more?
Sometimes brands will provide a back pocket too, but if you want even more storage space then you’ll have to opt for cargo joggers which come with one pocket on the front of each leg in addition to those on the sides.
You’ll also want to consider whether the pockets provided have closures. Some may feature zips, while cargo pockets tend to utilise a button. Whichever the brand offers, it’s certainly safer than having none!
As joggers pretty much always come with an elasticated waistband, they’re never going to be too restrictive around your stomach. Still, picking up a pair with a drawstring can come in handy - you can adjust the fit so that it's just right.
Also, this will help if you’re unsure about the sizing from a particular brand. There's no need to worry if you accidentally purchase a pair that's slightly too big around the waist as you can always reign them in a little with the drawstring for a more snug fit.
Having considered all of the important factors relating to style and comfort, it’s now time to take a look at our top 10. With options ranging from casual to classy, we’re sure to have something to suit everyone here!
