If you ever find that you have too much time to kill, there are few things as great for banishing boredom as a good old LEGO set. Not only do they help time fly, but they'll also bring back nostalgic memories of sitting on the floor on Christmas morning, searching through the pieces. We’re not talking about sets of a few hundred pieces though - nowadays, LEGO designs large-scale products with varying levels of difficulty that'll keep you occupied for hours!
Whether you're looking for a special gift or something unique to display in your home, there's never been a better time to invest in a new LEGO set. We'll be sharing the best ones to buy at UK sites like Amazon, John Lewis, and Argos, from top franchises such as Star Wars and Harry Potter. After all, why should kids have all the fun?
A recommendation service that carefully researches each product and consults with experts across many disciplines. We are constantly creating new content to provide the best shopping experience from choosing ‘cosmetics’ to ‘food and drink’, ‘home appliances’ to ‘kids and baby’ products, reaching users all across the United Kingdom.
Table of Contents
While it’s likely that most people reading this article would be happy sitting down with any old LEGO set, there are a few things to think about before you hit that "add to cart" button. Since these sets aren’t the most wallet-friendly purchase, you’ll want to make sure you choose something that you’re definitely going to enjoy putting together.
The first thing you should contemplate when shopping is your, or the recipient’s, interests. This purchase is supposed to be fun, so selecting a set that'll be engaging is essential. Here, we’ll look at some of the most popular types of products that are made by LEGO.
By far the most popular sets out there are those based on franchises; as a result, LEGO has produced loads of film or TV-themed products in recent years. They've partnered with all of the major pop culture brands such as The Simpsons, Marvel, and Harry Potter!
Some older fans may want to pick something that they always wanted when they were a kid, like a Star Wars-themed figure, while others will find joy in building a scene from a modern franchise that wasn't around when they were younger!
If you're a bit of a petrol head or you know someone who is, you'll be glad to know that there are tons of vehicle-building options when it comes to LEGO. Everything from supercars to catamarans has been miniaturised and transformed into block form as part of the LEGO Technics range.
These builds are often done to scale, with incredibly realistic construction that focuses on the whole vehicle, not just the exterior. That means you can expect to be building an actual V8 engine - a prospect that's bound to get those with mechanical minds excited!
Not only does LEGO have the power to cure boredom and expand your creative horizons, but sets can also help you to see the world... well, kind of! You see, ranges such as Architecture and Creative allow you to recreate some of the most amazing buildings in the world.
So, why not tackle a Tokyo skyline, the Taj Mahal, or even Trafalgar Square if you want to build something that's a little closer to home. Each set comes with a handy information booklet full of facts about the design, architecture, and history of the building too, making it an educational purchase as well as a fun one!
Finally, you have the option of everything else that LEGO offers - which is a lot! We've called this "miscellaneous" in the specification tables because there's no other term that's quite as fitting - these sets can be anything from complex police stations and sprawling rollercoasters to block versions of the classic "ship in a bottle" ornament.
While these sets still have instructions and a fixed structure, they're a great pick for those with creative imaginations who aren't swayed by what's in fashion and simply want to build to their heart's content.
After you’ve decided on a theme, you should check out the number of pieces included. This will give you a good indication of two things: how big the set is and, more importantly, how complex it'll be.
Now, we’re not saying that a complex project will necessarily be overwhelming for everyone, but some folks do struggle when it comes to staying focused for long periods of time. If you want to get building but don’t know if you’ll be able to stick out constructing the full Hogwarts set, maybe choose something smaller to start off with.
As a rough guide, most medium-sized sets designed for adults have around 2000-3500 pieces. Depending on your mood and level of dedication, you may want to opt for a bigger product - if you're up to the challenge!
Another factor worth considering is how large the piece will be when completed - chances are, once you’ve completed your creation, you won't want to dismantle it and pack it away again.
Sets can vary a lot in terms of width, height, and depth. Therefore, we recommend thinking about where you plan to display your creation once you’ve finished building it and checking that the set you want to purchase will fit this area.
Finally, whilst this article is of course about sets for adults, checking the suggested age range is also a good idea as it lets you know how intricate the product will be. There are collections out there that are suitable for 10, 11, and 12+ years that will easily keep adults entertained, but they’ll have a pretty quick turnover time.
We believe the best age rating to look for is 16+ years. These sets are much more challenging and require extra focus, meaning you should stay hooked on your new project for a while - and you'll get your money's worth!

Why not travel to two different realms with your set? This collaboration between LEGO and the hugely popular Netflix show Stranger Things won a "Toy of the Year" award from the Toy Association in 2020 - and we can see why!
The set features the main house from the series, with Will's bedroom, the living room, and the dining room, plus those infamous alphabet lights! The Upside Down world version takes this landscape and changes the colour, adds vines leaves, and makes the building completely dilapidated. Best of all, you get eight figures too, including Eleven, Chief Hopper, and Dustin. We really can't think of a cooler LEGO set for adults!
The Taj Mahal is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and was commissioned by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his favourite wife. Since its completion, it's been recognised as one of the most remarkable architectural feats of all time. Now, you can recreate its beauty at home - if you're feeling up to the task!
With nearly 6000 pieces, this is one of the largest LEGO sets ever created - so you'll need to be dedicated if you want to finish it! Luckily, once completed, you can separate certain parts of the design. This makes it easier to move and means that you won't be required to rebuild it from scratch every time.
The first thing we want to mention when it comes to this "ship in a bottle" set is how amazingly detailed the ship itself is. You see, on that tiny little object, there are the captain's quarters, masts, a crow's nest, cannons, and even printed sails! Considering these are intricacies that most people won't even be able to see, you can tell how seriously LEGO takes the craft of building!
From there, let's zoom out and take a look at the set as a whole. The bottle has water elements inside, a buildable cork stopper, and a lovely display stand. It might not be one of the biggest sets on our list, but it's certainly one of the most sophisticated.
The DB5 first appeared in the James Bond movie Goldfinger in 1964 and became an instant fan favourite. Here, you'll have the chance to recreate the elegance and sophistication of 007's Aston Martin. Plus, the set does more than look good - it comes with a wealth of working gadgetry too!
While the design of the exterior is exceptional, it's once you open the doors that things start to become really fun. Inside, you'll find a door compartment containing a telephone, an ejector passenger seat, a winding bullet-proof rear window, and much, much more.
With over 5000 pieces, this set isn't for the faint-hearted! That being said, if you have the determination (and the space to display it once you've finished) then the pay-off is quite extraordinary. Once you've tapped the brick wall behind the Leaky Cauldron pub, you'll find Diagon Alley street as well as 14 witch and wizard figures.
This remarkable set captures the spirit of Harry Potter like no other and can be built in four different ways, meaning you get more for your money. With replicas of shops like Ollivanders and Weasley's Wizard Wheezes, there's plenty of magic to be had on London's most secretive shopping street.
The neoclassical Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to New York and is fondly remembered by many who visit the city. It's a statue that epitomises freedom, and this impressive set allows you to accurately recreate the monument's stunning blend of sculpture and architecture.
While not being quite as commanding as the real thing, this product is still eye-catching, with an authentic colourway of beige and green. It'll be of serious interest to those who love travel, architecture, and history. Plus, it'll look pretty cool in your living room!
If you're looking to recapture your childhood when building a LEGO collection, why not recreate a retro object from those days? This set ensures a building experience like no other as you get to construct a reproduction of the classic NES system with the original controller, game pack, and even a 1980s TV set!
This is a wonderfully fun concept with nuanced details too. For example, the game cartridge can be slotted into the system, the life-sized controller feels authentic, and you can move Mario across the screen in all his 8-bit glory by winding a key.
We don't want to crush anyone's dreams, but this set is unfortunately likely to be the closest many of us will ever get to owning a supercar. Part of the LEGO Technic range, it spectacularly recreates the DNA of Bugatti - just at a 1:8 scale and a few million pounds cheaper!
In addition to being the owner of said small Bugatti, you'll also have insight into how they're built in real life thanks to the detailed instructions that mirror the actual factory process. The only problem is, you won't be able to nip out to Tesco in it!
We can't help but feel nostalgic for the magical treehouse in Swiss Family Robinson when looking at this set. The LEGO Ideas version consists of over 3000 pieces, with accessible cabins, a wind-up crane, and a sturdy landscape base that make it easy to display.
We love the attention to detail, especially the inclusion of themed accessories such as binoculars and a treasure map. While this set may not appeal to everyone, if you've ever wanted your own treehouse then this mini version is ideal.
To get the ball rolling, we've opted for a fantastic LEGO and Star Wars collaboration. We know that this one may not be as popular as the Millennium Falcon or the Death Star, but those sets are mentioned all the time so we wanted to change the script a little. Therefore, we've chosen the AT-AT set, which is just as iconic.
The AT-AT (all-terrain armoured transport) is a vehicle used by the Galactic Empire to transport ground forces when battling the Rebel Alliance. It's impressive-looking but not too daunting, at just over 1000 pieces. However, this means it might not take you very long to complete!
