If you’re a recent bird owner, then first things first, congratulations on getting a new family member. Secondly, you need to sort out its living situation quick-time! As buying a home for a parrot, parakeet or another feathered friend can be confusing if you haven’t done it before, we’ve put together a guide that includes handy tips, tricks and ideas about what features to look for.
For example, we’ll look into the different sizes of bird cages, why the distance between the bars is important, what shapes are best and how to get the most bang for your buck. We'll also share our favourite products for sale right now on Amazon, including everything from large cages with stands and other modern features to affordable options for small breeds like finches.
A recommendation service that carefully researches each product and consults with experts across many disciplines. We are constantly creating new content to provide the best shopping experience from choosing ‘cosmetics’ to ‘food and drink’, ‘home appliances’ to ‘kids and baby’ products, reaching users all across the United Kingdom.
Table of Contents
Of course, the first thing to consider when buying a bird cage is its size. As a general rule of thumb, the bigger the better. Remember, these birds are originally from vast, open nature, so for their comfort and happiness, you should be preparing as big and spacious a room as possible for them.
Bigger cages also allow for food, water, toy and swings, which you’ll need to make it feel like home. Experts say that the width of the cage should be at the very minimum, at least 1.5 times the length of your bird's open wingspan.
It’s also worth remembering that birds like to be up high. Therefore, a taller cage will give them the space to sit up top and look out, which is how they spend their time in the wild.

Next, you’ll want to consider the shape of the cage. Traditionally, bird cages came in the shape of a bell, with round curved features at the top. However, these are dangerous for certain types of birds as it’s easy for them to get their beak, tail, foot or ankle caught in the small spaces where the bars come together at the top of the dome. In turn, this could result in a pretty nasty accident.
For that reason, we would recommend looking at rectangular or square cages as there’s not only less chance of accidents happening, but they’re also naturally more spacious. This is a win-win, as your bird will stay safe and have more room, and you’ll avoid any hefty vet costs.
When buying a cage, you want to ensure that your bird is safe between the bars. Birds are cheeky and can try and squeeze their way out, which can see them escape if the spacing is too large or even become stuck. With this in mind, getting the appropriate bar spacing is essential.
Now, as you’d expect, this will depend on your bird. However, for convenience, we have put them into three groups – small, medium and large – which we can then give recommendations on for each size. Small birds should have spacing up to 1.2 cm, medium birds up to 1.9 cm and large birds up to 3 cm.
Sadly, not all bird cages manufacturers display this information, so for safety, we would recommend getting in contact with them, just to be doubly sure that the cage will be suitable for your breed.
There are two options when looking at the doors on a cage, and they’re super easy to remember – you either have small or large ones. Smaller swing doors will ensure that your bird cannot escape but can mean that you have limited access to the interior, which could make cleaning or topping up their food and water more difficult.
Large doors, on the other hand, flip that on its head. You’ll have much easier access to everything, but there is a greater chance that your bird will be able to escape. However, if you are careful and ensure that doors and windows are closed in the room as you go about these tasks, then you can avoid any issues.

If you’re looking to buy a big cage, then lifting it and carrying it every time you need to move it can become tedious very quickly. So, finding one that has casters will make moving it much more painless. You’ll be able to clean around it much easier, as well as move the bird to busier parts of the home if you feel like it’s not getting enough attention.
Furthermore, the models with casters are usually the perfect height for bird cages as they generally come up to the abdomen and chest. The reason is this is handy is because if the height of the cage is a little low, then your pet can feel frightened and intimidated. Of course, if you opt for one without legs and casters, then you can always pop it on a table.
Finally, as your bird will surely appreciate anything designed to make its life more comfortable, it’s worth checking what additional accessories come with your purchase. Otherwise, you’ll have to buy these separately. The most common inclusions are perches for sitting and feeding cups.
Others may include a swing or some toys, a drinking bottle, baths, ladders, and clips for additional food and treats. However, except for perches and feeding equipment, we would consider removable trays the best inclusion. This is because they make the cleaning up process a whole lot easier, and you know for sure that it already fits the cage, which is extremely handy.

With its many tiers, this cage from Yaheetech looks more like an avian hotel than a cage. As well as four storeys and plenty of perches, there are numerous toys and accessories included. Plus, we like the nifty feeder doors that are accessible without opening the cage, making it much quicker to fill up their feed.
As with most good cages, there's a removable tray underneath for easy maintenance. The steel frame material is painted so that it's rust and corrosion-proof, and while this can cause concern because birds like to chew things, this is non-toxic. This cage really has it all, and for a great price, too.
It might be on the pricey side, but can you really put a price on your pet's happiness? This spacious number from Ferplast is built from sturdy varnished metal and plastic columns. There's a large tray bottom to collect dirt which is easy to remove and clean, plus the whole thing comes with a stand and 180-degree rotating casters.
Throughout the cage, there are also a whopping eight different small doors that you can gain access through. As you'd expect, the company don't hold back when it comes to the accessories either, providing a whole range of goodies that your winged partner will love.
Although we're primarily looking at cages for indoors, it's always nice to pick up a piece of equipment that can do multiple jobs. For that reason, this flight case made its way into our ranking. It isn't the biggest, but it's sufficient for some smaller breeds and also has the ability to transport if you need to pop to the vets.
Moreover, there is one large door for easy access and a couple of small doors if you need to nip in and fill up the feed or water. We've opted for the black finish here, but there's also a white version if that's something that you might prefer.
Here we have another rather large cage, although we don't think we'd quite go as far as to say 'extra' large like the company. It comes with plenty of small opening doors for easy access and is designed to be heavy duty with lots of stability.
The casters roll in a 360-degree motion, making it easy to manoeuvre the cage whenever it's required. The cage is available in either black or white, and although it requires assembling on arrival, it's known to be straightforward enough for most people to handle.
Yaheetech makes some top quality cages, one of which is this lovely hanging number. It's a spacious design, with plenty of room inside for any adornments that you might want to pimp it out with alongside those that come included. Standing taller rather than wider, it is also is sure to be preferable for your flying friends.
One interesting aspect is that the roof opens wide and can be kept open with a perch. This can be a great addition for your pet when it's time to come out and play. While it is on the big side, the design also has two handles at the top to support carrying. They might not be casters, but they're sure better than nothing.
While many cages will set you back a pretty penny, we managed to find this beauty from Heritage which is ideal if you're working on a strict budget. Although they do have other sizes (and colours) available, this particular option is better for smaller birds.
Even though it's budget-friendly, the company still find time to provide you with two perches and feeding bowls – talk about value for money. However, it really is on the small side, so it's only suitable for mini breeds or as a travel or cleaning cage.
The main body of this is rectangular with a nice domed roof area. While usually, it's best to steer clear of rounded roofs because the wires become closer together and pose a hazard, thankfully, this isn't the case here. They're evenly spaced so you don't need to be concerned at all.
Additionally, the purchase comes with plenty of accessories that are suited to the smaller sized cage. Some buyers have found that the clips between the two plastic parts can be a little fragile, so you'll want to be careful when opening and closing them.
While cages must be practical, it doesn't hurt if they're aesthetically pleasing too, hence why this cute little piece of kit made the cut. The decorated, two-tier cage is on the smaller side but should be perfect for breeds such as parakeets, canaries and similar sized birds.
Furthermore, the company throw in a few useful accessories to help the place feel more like a home for your bird. Our only concern is that it's a little bit on the pricey side for what it is. But if you have the cash and like the style, why not treat the both of you?
Here we have a cage that is ideal for multiple smaller birds. You see, while the dimensions are on the larger side, the enclosure itself is separated into two rooms down the middle, each with space for one or two birds. As you can see, the cage also comes with legs and casters that make it easily transportable.
The downside is that the whole thing is wider than it is taller, and as we mentioned, this isn't ideal as birds prefer to be higher up. That said, if you have plenty of birds and need a lot of space to store them, these cages are stackable, which will save you space.
While this is a rather rudimentary and basic cage, some people might be looking for an option that's a little more traditional. So, here it is. This offering from HONGYIFEI is straightforward and, made from wrought iron, it's sure to be sturdy and secure.
However, this really is best for decorative use or as a second cage. For example, the only way to access the inside is by taking the cage apart, which will be a bit of a faff. Not only that, but it's on the smaller side already, so it will only decrease in size when you start filling it up with the requirements such as perches and food bowls.
