Furthermore, they can be of benefit to folk with uneven shoulders as they help position the tie to mitigate this. Many companies also have personalised ones made with images of their logo for members to represent, although we won't be including those in our article! If you go for a plain bar, you can always get it engraved, however.
The first thing to consider is the type of accessory; in other words, whether you want to opt for a tie bar or a tie clip. While these terms are often used interchangeably, they do have a couple of differences design-wise.
The tie bar is a basic and sleeker version of the tie clip. They're essentially a piece of folded metal that works like a kirby grip for the hair. They tuck into your shirt placket and over your tie and keep everything neatly in place. These are better for men who want their tie to lie flat and prefer thinner or more delicate fabrics.
The tie clip is a slightly bulkier version as it has a spring mechanism similar to that used on a clothes peg. These are better suited for those who like to wear bulkier tie materials, such as knitted or felt options, and although they work with lighter fabrics, they could damage them.
Complete your dapper ensemble by getting a pair of cufflinks to match!
Another cardinal rule of choosing a tie clip, or bar for that matter, is to make sure you get the right length. Too long, and it’ll be hanging over the edge of your tie, which doesn’t portray the put-together look quite as you’d like. Too short, and you’ll look like you’ve borrowed your son’s or little brothers'.
Therefore, as a rule of thumb, the accessory should fall somewhere between 2⁄3 and ¾ the width of your tie. Of course, this will also depend on the tie you’re wearing, but as a frame of reference, a standard one is around 4.4-6.3 cm wide. Skinnier ties will be narrower than this, which is worth remembering if your collection includes mostly this type.

The last feature to consider is the material of the clip or bar. Now, in our recommendations, we’ll be mainly sticking to affordable metals, such as stainless steel, brass and copper. While these may be much cheaper, they’re still reliable, robust and non-rusting, so you’ll be able to get a decent amount of wear from them before you need to buy a new one.
Further, these affordable metals can also be plated with gold or silver. This gives the effect of wearing more expensive jewellery without having to pay the often eye-watering prices of the former.
Of course, if you’re someone who appreciates the finer things in life or you're buying a special item as a gift or perhaps for your wedding day, then you can always opt for precious metals such as yellow or white gold. However, be warned, these can quickly run up into the hundreds of pounds.
