There's no better place to begin your wall decal journey than by considering colour scheme. Everybody knows that the number one rule of interior design is the effective pairing of colours, but there's more than one way in which two colours can be matched.
You may wish to opt for a monochromatic pairing. That is, two different shades of the same colour, such as coral pink against a deep scarlet backdrop. Or, you could opt for contrasting colours (these that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel) which have a more visually striking result. Whether this is appropriate or not will depend on their placement and your tastes!
If your room is a bit of a blank canvas and has no existing colour scheme, why not use your new wall decal to establish one? Calm, neutral tones such as grey or marine blue work particularly well in the living room, while light, fresh colours such as yellow and white look great in the kitchen or bathroom.
While there are wall decals out there that'll fit equally well in pretty much any room, there are others, which feature quite distinct designs, that work significantly better in certain rooms.
To understand what we mean, take a look at some of the examples in our top 10 below: the Moroccan-style design, for example, works particularly well in the kitchen because its square decals mimic kitchen tiles. So, too, does the lemon design for the freshness that its yellow colour inspires – and the fact it features a food item!
On the other hand, patterns such as polka dots might look rather odd in the kitchen, working better in a cosy room such as the bedroom where you're free to get a little more creative with your design choices.

Wall decals come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and this means that sticker quantities differ considerably between designs – you may, for example, find yourself choosing between one huge sticker and several hundred smaller ones.
It's always helpful to know exactly what you'll be working with, as sticker quantity can drastically alter the effect your wall decal (or decals) will have. Large, single stickers make great statement pieces, especially if applied to a living room or bedroom wall.
Higher quantities of smaller stickers will give you more creative freedom . You could choose to cluster them together on a single feature wall, or spread them throughout the room produce a patterned or tiled effect.
Once you've decided whether you prefer the look of one or several wall decals, the next step is to check the dimensions to ensure that they're of an appropriate size for your home.
In the case of a single sticker, you'll want to strike the perfect balance with a decal that is large enough to attract attention but not so large that it overwhelms the room. Again, just use the dimensions, perhaps while putting markers on the wall, to help you work this out.
Similar rules apply when using several smaller decals, though this time you'll want to ensure that their size will allow you to create the desired effect, whether that's arranging several together over your sofa or bed or spreading them across the room.
You're now fully equipped to begin shopping for your new wall decal, but before you do, why not take a look at ten of our favourites? From Malaysian tiles to octopus arms, it's quite an eclectic selection!
