How to Choose Supermarket Chicken Soup in the UK - Buying Guide

With a seemingly endless supply of chicken soup found online, it can be quite the task to trim the fat and find a suitable soup for you. That's why we've created this short and informative buying guide with the most relevant and important points to make your decision an assured and easy one.

Find a Variety That’ll Have You Longing for More

Find a Variety That’ll Have You Longing for More

With the first records of chicken soup dating back to ancient China, chicken and soup have been an inseparable pairing of remedial cuisine for thousands of years. In the modern-day, we're lucky enough to have a wide variety available to us, from the classics to the more daring.

One classic that no one can argue about is cream of chicken. As an incredibly rich and thick soup that's a little naughty on the calorie count but ever so delicious, it's perfect for warming bones on a winter's day. Chicken noodle and roast chicken with vegetable are two more adored favourites of the nation.

Modern chicken soups that are likely to interest the slightly more adventurous eaters include pulses, beans and spices as well as regionally inspired flavours of the world. Chicken bone broth is a hugely beneficial one for the immune system, helping you to feel your best and fight off the rest.

Choose Between Fresh, Tinned or Packet Soup

Choose Between Fresh, Tinned or Packet Soup

To bring home the closest thing to homemade, wholesome goodness, you need to be shopping for fresh soup specifically. However, this certainly isn't the only way of getting a tasty and nutritious chicken soup fix, and it can be pricey.

Tinned chicken soup is super popular for its extended best-before date that is usually set to two years after canning. This prolonged shelf life coupled with the fact it doesn't need to be refrigerated means it can become a cupboard staple without a worry about it.

Cup-a-soups and dry mixes are ideal for commuters and campers alike as they make transporting your daily portion a lightweight, easy breeze. They're also a great way of watching what you eat, with health-conscious brands bringing plenty of low-fat and cup soups to the table.

Consider the Protein to Stay Satisfied for Longer

Consider the Protein to Stay Satisfied for Longer

While the reasons why people eat chicken soup vary tremendously, protein is one aspect that everyone can benefit from. Chicken is a lean and nutritious meat that's consumed around the world for promoting muscle growth and bone health and is a great source of protein

For those who are looking for a protein fix from their chicken soup, be on the lookout for any soup that has at least 2.5 g per 100 g. This doesn't sound like a lot, but when you consider that most cans of soup are 400 grams, this equates to a 10 g helping of protein – perfect for sustaining you between meals.

Watching Your Waistline? Look for Low-Fat Soups

Watching Your Waistline? Look for Low-Fat Soups

If eaten as part of a balanced diet, chicken soup is recommended by health professionals to aid in weight loss. However, it's no secret that some soups are much better at doing this than others, so you should be clued up on this if you're looking to slim down.

Chicken bone broths are highly nutritious while remaining low in fat. However, it's the dry mix and cup soups that are often purposefully created to be as lean and as light as possible on the calorie and fat fronts, with a lot of them having less than half a gram of fat per serving.

The soups to watch out for are, of course, the creamier and richer ones which will likely have at least 3 g of fat per 100 g. Obviously, they are still considered healthy for people who aren't trying to shed the pounds, they're just better off avoided for the people who are.

Check for Allergens That Might Be Hiding in Recipes

Check for Allergens That Might Be Hiding in Recipes

Sometimes it's the allergens that you least expect to be in a soup that can cause your body the most issues if consumed. That's why it's always recommended to scope out each soup's allergen information to know for sure that your dietary requirements have been met.

The most common offenders in supermarket chicken soups are celery, mustard, egg, wheat and soya. The inclusion of wheat means coeliacs and people who choose not to eat gluten should be on the lookout for soups that are clearly labelled to be gluten-free.

Besides the obvious cream of chicken soups which are stacked with cream and milk, dairy derivatives like whey powder are included in many supermarket recipes for flavour and texture, making them a big no-no for lactose-intolerant people.

Top 10 Best Chicken Soups in the UK

Don't settle for a second rate, run-of-the-mill chicken soup – you're better off giving yourself something especially delectable to get excited about instead. Whether you're hunting down a low-fat, high-protein or gluten-free soup, you can be certain that this list has something delicious for you.
