How to Choose Japanese Tea in the UK

Key Points to Consider

  1. Understand the Different Variations and What Flavour Tea You Want
  2. Consider the Steeping Process and Pick Between Loose Leaves or Teabags
  3. Choose Organic Tea for Its Health and Environmental Benefits

1. Understand the Variations and Select a Flavour: Sencha Is Herbal While Genmaicha Has a Nutty Taste

1. Understand the Variations and Select a Flavour: Sencha Is Herbal While Genmaicha Has a Nutty Taste

The world of Japanese tea can be overwhelming for those who don't know much about it. Although the majority fall under the category of green tea, each variation is distinct in taste and aroma. Here are some of the main types:

  • Sencha (煎茶): By far the most popular tea in Japan, sencha is a type of green tea (ryokucha). It mainly has a fresh and herbal taste but can also be nutty, floral and fruity. Drinking sencha is said to help with weight loss, prevent chronic diseases and provide your body with important vitamins and minerals.

  • Genmaicha (玄米茶): A brown rice green tea made by mixing roasted brown rice kernels with sencha green tea. Notably, it has a toasty and nutty flavour to it and is yellow in colour. Genmaicha is known to help balance blood sugar levels and improve concentration.

  • Hojicha (ほうじ茶): First made in Kyoto, this type of green tea is unique given that it is roasted over charcoal. As a result of this process, it has a smoky and roasted flavour to it as well as being reddish-brown in colour. Hojicha helps fight colds, keeps skin looking clear and boosts metabolism.

  • Bancha (番茶): Another type of green tea made from the lower shoots of the tea plant which are harvested at a later time, bancha has earthy and dry toasty notes. Compared to the other teas on this list, it has fewer health benefits but is still a great source of minerals and good for digestion.

  • Kukicha (茎茶): Also called 'twig tea', kukicha is a blend of stems, stalks and twigs. It has a mildly nutty and creamy sweet flavour and is known for its unique aroma. Kukicha has the power to combat fatigue and reduce high blood pressure.

  • Mugicha (麦茶): Otherwise known as barley tea, mugicha is made by steeping roasted barley grains. Cold barley tea is a popular summertime drink in Japan and is found in most vending machines there. Good for digestion and weight loss, mugicha has a number of healthful properties. It is slightly bitter with an earthy and toasty taste.

  • Oolong (烏龍茶): Although originally from China, Japan has created its own version of the tea. Oolong is half-fermented tea, in other words, it's in between black and green tea. It has the potential to improve heart health and prevent osteoporosis. Many describe it as having a fruity and floral flavour.

2. Consider the Taste, Tradition and Convenience of Loose Leaves, Powdered Tea and Bags

2. Consider the Taste, Tradition and Convenience of Loose Leaves, Powdered Tea and Bags

Used by the majority of Japanese today and throughout history, loose tea will give you a stronger and more authentic flavour. Tea leaves are fragrant and have a more distinctive aroma. This is because steeping the full leaves allows the antioxidants, minerals and nutrients to be fully released. While often costlier than teabags, leaves can be used two to three times on average.

Japanese teas also come in powder form, most notably matcha, which is very easy to prepare. Although they are similar, matcha and green tea have many differences. For example, matcha is much more concentrated than regular green tea because the whole leaf is used.

Teabags are always a great option when you don't have a lot of time and want to make an easy cup of tea. Although they are considered to have a lower-grade taste than loose leaves, especially in regard to Japanese tea, they do still have a lot of flavour.

3. Seek Out Organic Teas for a More Conscious and Potentially Healthier Infusion

3. Seek Out Organic Teas for a More Conscious and Potentially Healthier Infusion

The main difference between organic and standard teas is that the former is harvested and grown without using chemical fertilisers and pesticides. For those who are concerned with what they eat and their health, purchasing organic tea may be something you will want to consider.

In addition to arguably being better for your health, organic teas are better for the farmers and the environment. By not using fertilisers, the tea plants and wildlife are protected and live for longer. Yet, it is worth noting that in Japan, non-organic tea is preferred because it is considered to have a better flavour. Therefore, it is slightly harder to find organic tea from Japanese brands.
