The whole point of a rangefinder is to improve your accuracy, so that you can keep your score as low as possible. If you're a skilled player, you might be able to rely on guesswork alone, but beginners could really benefit from the most accurate measurements possible.

The physical features and build quality of your rangefinder will have a huge impact on your overall experience. Ideally, you should look for a display that's bright and clear, with at least 5x magnification and a diopter adjuster to provide crisp images and easy-read measurements. 

You'll also need to protect it from the elements when on the course, so waterproofing or protective carry cases are useful for playing in rainy conditions. We also recommend choosing one that weighs somewhere around 0.25 kg to ensure it's easy to carry, without being too delicate.  

The final feature to consider is battery life. Most rangefinders run on CR2 batteries, which last between 6 and 12 months before requiring a replacement or recharge. The rechargeable variety will last hundreds of cycles before a replacement is required, but as a new set is relatively inexpensive, it's good practice to keep a spare in your bag.
