8 Best Artificial Christmas Trees 2024 | UK Interior Designer Reviewed

The idea of neatly wrapped presents under a real Christmas tree conjures up a cosy image straight from the front of a greetings card. Sadly, the reality is dragging a 6-foot shrub all the way home just for it to scatter piles of loose needles all over the carpet and turn brown before the big day. This year, why not go for an artificial tree instead? A plastic fir might seem a bit naff to some, but a high-quality buy can look just like the real thing, only it won’t shed and it’ll stay green for years to come.

In this article, we share some handy hints on what to look for when shopping online, including trees with LED lights and white, coloured, and decorating options. Read on ’til the end to discover our top 8 picks from Amazon and John Lewis! Moreover, we have partnered with interior designer Belen Dakak for reviewing and fact-checking the article to deliver you the best information.

How to Choose an Artificial Christmas Tree in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. Make Sure to Buy the Right Size Tree to Fit Your Space
  2. Create the Right Effect by considering the Materials Your Tree is Made From
  3. Opt for a Metal Base if You Want the Sturdiest Option
  4. For a Fuller Look, Choose a Tree With a High Tip Count
  5. Choose Colourful and Pre-Decorated Trees for the Easiest Decorating Process
1

Make Sure It’s 6” Lower Than Your Ceiling : A 6ft Tree Will Look Impressive in a Room With a High Ceiling, but 4ft Will Better Fit a Bedroom or Flat

Make Sure It’s 6” Lower Than Your Ceiling : A 6ft Tree Will Look Impressive in a Room With a High Ceiling, but 4ft Will Better Fit a Bedroom or Flat
The first thing you should consider when buying an artificial Christmas tree is where you plan to put it. Artificial trees come in a variety of sizes so make sure to select the right one to fit your space.

A full-size tree should stand 6 inches lower than your ceiling height, so for the average UK living room, a 6 ft or 7 ft tree is ideal. Not only will your room look much better without the tree branches brushing against the ceiling, but it will allow enough space for that all-important tree topper!

If you only have limited space, there are small 4 ft trees and mini trees of 2 ft or less that are perfect for decorating bedrooms or displaying as a festive table centrepiece. Flatback trees are an ideal space-saving solution for compact studios and apartments, where the tree can stand against a wall and still look great.

There are also slim trees designed for tight spaces such as corridors or corners, so it may be best to note the diameter of the tree if you’d like to position your tree in a more compact space.

Any size tree can look its best with our favourite Christmas tree decorations!

2

Choose a PVC Tree if You Want a Bushy Base for Hanging Decoration, or PE for a More Realistic Look

Choose a PVC Tree if You Want a Bushy Base for Hanging Decoration, or PE for a More Realistic Look
Most artificial Christmas trees are made either from PE or PVC. PE trees are generally higher quality and more realistic than PVC. This is because the needles on PE trees are individually moulded, whereas PVC begins as a sheet and is then cut into thin strips to resemble needles.

The upside to PVC trees is that they are cheaper, and can look bushier from a distance. They can also be a good option if you are not concerned with having a realistic-looking tree. Some trees may also use a combination of PE and PVC to achieve their desired look, giving you the best of both worlds.

3

Opting for a Metal Base Will Prevent Your Tree From Falling Over

Opting for a Metal Base Will Prevent Your Tree From Falling Over
As well as the tree itself, it’s important to consider the material that the stand is made from. We recommend looking for trees with a metal base, as they are weightier and sturdier than plastic and therefore prevent your tree from leaning or falling over. This is especially relevant if you plan to use heavy or plentiful decorations!

In households with pets or small children, you may be especially concerned about the potential danger of a falling tree. You should always opt for the highest quality materials in your decorations where possible, to help protect from damage and avoid costly replacements and repairs.

To Avoid Your Tree Looking Sparse, Pick One With 500 - 2000 Tips, or 200 - 500 Tips for Trees Under 4ft

To Avoid Your Tree Looking Sparse, Pick One With 500 - 2000 Tips, or 200 - 500 Tips for Trees Under 4ft
The tip count refers to the number of individual branches on the tree. More tips create a fuller and bushier looking tree, so if you go with too few tips it may end up looking sparse. A large 6-7 ft tree can have anywhere from 500 to 2000 tips, with those on the higher end looking extra thick. For a small 4 ft tree, a tip count between 200 and 500 will be adequate.

However, a lower amount of tips isn't always a bad thing! There may be instances where the tree is designed to have a visible trunk or branches, it includes other features or decorations, or it's intended to give off a minimalist aesthetic, in which case exceptions can be made.

In addition to the tip count, the "species" of the artificial tree will also determine the bushiness of the tree, for example, a fir tree will have dense branches with flat and flexible needles sprouting individually from the stem, whereas a pine tree will have sparser branches around the trunk, with thin needles attached to the stem in clusters of two, three, or five.

5

Consider a Fibre Optic or LED Tree to Create Christmas Lighting Displays Without Visible or Tangled Wires

Consider a Fibre Optic or LED Tree to Create Christmas Lighting Displays Without Visible or Tangled Wires
Quick and convenient to set up, pre-lit trees have small LED lights or fibre optic strands built into the branches – so you won’t have to spend hours untangling last year’s fairy lights! Plus they prevent messy visible wires being on display, which will only add to the magical appearance of your tree.

It’s worth noting that you won’t be able to change the placement of pre-fitted lights, and their bulbs can be difficult to replace if they break or burn out. Pre-lit artificial trees can come with energy-efficient LEDs that are rated to last longer than incandescent lights, so your tree will shine bright for many years.

But if you prefer the fun of decorating a tree from scratch and like to change up the theme from year to year, an unlit tree is likely the best choice for you!

No tree would be complete without a Christmas tree topper!

A White Christmas Tree to Use as a Base for Decorations

Turn your living room into a fantasy winter wonderland with this unlit snowy tree. If you fancy trying out a coloured tree but aren’t sure which one to go for, we recommend getting a white tree. White is an excellent base to let your decorations seriously pop, and it won’t clash with your home decor!

Decorate this tree with dark red and gold for a luxurious appearance, or if traditional is not your thing, go for something fun and unique like shades of blue, orange or pink. With a white Christmas tree all decorating rules are off the table – so let your creativity shine!

Slim, Space-Saving Tree for Corners and Hallways

This pencil-slim contemporary Christmas tree from Festive Productions is a great space-saving option for your home. Standing at 6.5 ft tall, it’s the same height as a regular full-size tree but with a much smaller diameter.

This tree fits nicely on landings, in corridors and even in kitchens. Despite its sleek shape, the clean and uncomplicated design with 570 bushy PVC tips leaves plenty of space for tinsel, lights and other 3D decorations.

The Yaheetech 3 ft tabletop tree is a great choice if you are looking for a compact artificial tree. It’s the perfect size to bring cheer to a bedroom or display on your window sill, while still being big enough to show off your favourite festive decorations.

A timeless, simple design; the traditional green pine sits neatly on a cement, cloth-wrapped stand. No construction is necessary and the small size means you can easily store it away again for next year.

Show-Stopping Blue and White Light-Up Fibre Optic Tree

If you’re looking for something a bit more unusual this Christmas, we suggest WeRChristmas’ Blue & White Fibre Optic Christmas Tree. Using a combination of LEDs and fibre optic strands woven into the tips, this stunning light-up tree will certainly wow your guests.

A good fit for most homes, it comes available to buy in three sizes with a slim design that allows it to sit comfortably in tight and narrow spaces. When lit, this tree is without a doubt an absolute show stopper! However, you may have to stick to a blue and white colour scheme to prevent it from clashing with your other decorations.

Adorable Snow-Dusted Miniature Christmas Tree

This adorable snow flocked Christmas tree stands just 53 cm tall! A quaint, traditional design, we recommend using Lights4fun’s Mini Artificial Christmas Tree as a charming table centrepiece at this year’s Christmas dinner.

The slightly sparse PE tips make this miniature tree look incredibly realistic, and the natural jute bag wrapped base is a lovely finishing touch. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to hang many decorations from its branches, and it’s probably not a good choice if you’re hoping for a lot of presents from Father Christmas.

A Versatile Artificial Alternative to a Real Fir Tree

If you are looking for an artificial alternative to a real fir tree this Christmas, this gorgeous Imperial Pine from Kaemingk is a fantastic choice. Standing at 7ft tall with a rich dark green colour, this tree makes a great blank canvas for your favourite decorations!

With only 770 tips, this tree may need a bit of fluffing up when you take it out of the box. However, with a bit of tinsel, it will be looking full in no time. Best of all, it’s an incredibly wallet-friendly option when it comes to finding a versatile full-size Christmas tree.
