Top 10 Best IPAs in the UK 2021

In the last decade, the world of alcoholic drinks has changed almost beyond recognition. Gone are the times when pubs and shops stocked only a couple of types of beer - now a dizzying array of ales, lagers, stouts and everything in between has become commonplace in most supermarkets, and it can be confusing. One style of beer that has seen perhaps the most dramatic resurgence is the IPA or India Pale Ale.

This light, sparkling ale known for its intense citrus notes and refreshing bitterness is one of the most popular types of craft beers, and for a good reason. Our buying guide will help you narrow down your choice from light and refreshing to robust, hoppy and bitter. We've found some great products from Amazon, Tesco, and Asda, including IPAs by brands such as Goose Island, BrewDog, and Sadler's. Now pour yourself a glass, and let's get going! Cheers!

What is an IPA?

What is an IPA?

With such a large variety of beers available nowadays, you may be wondering - what is an IPA, and how does it differ from other drinks such as lagers and ales?

The IPA style is a broad beer style within an even broader category of pale ales. There many different substyles and variations underneath, but IPAs are generally very hoppy, refreshing beers. Depending on the substyle, alcohol content can vary from around 4% to 7% and over.

The higher amount of hops than usual in IPAs, results in a bitter and fruity taste that is great for drinking chilled in the summer. However, the taste of each kind of IPA can vary greatly depending on the amount and type of hops used.

How to Choose an IPA in the UK - Buying Guide

With so much variety under the IPA umbrella, there is certainly something to suit everyone. Ingredients can vary from beer to beer, and it's useful to take other elements such as alcohol content, hop style and even the country of origin into account so that you can get a good idea of what you'll be drinking. Here you'll find everything you need to know to discover an IPA that you'll love.

Think About Food You Might Pair With Your IPA

Did you know that beer can pair with food just like wine? It may be less traditional, but IPA can make a great accompaniment to a range of meals. It is an excellent option if you aren't a fan of wine, are looking for a different experience, or want a drink with a lower alcohol content.

Playing around with IPA pairings can be a fun way to add character to a meal and experience new aromas and flavours that arise from different combinations. Of course, you might just fancy a glass of beer with friends without the faff of cooking a meal, and there are also IPAs out there that make a tremendous standalone drink.

Strong Flavours Are a Great Match for Rich or Spicy Food

Strong Flavours Are a Great Match for Rich or Spicy Food

If you're eating a hot curry, a grilled steak or a lamb dish, look out for indicators of a stronger, more bitter IPA to match. These can include a higher alcohol content, styles such as DIPA (Double IPA) or West Coast IPA (more on those later), and hop varieties including Mosaic, Simcoe and Cascade.

A sharp, complex blue cheese also makes a match made in heaven with a full-bodied IPA, as do bold, very sweet desserts like crème brulée, sticky toffee pudding or butterscotch cheesecake.

A Light IPA Won't Drown Out the Flavour of Mild Food

A Light IPA Won't Drown Out the Flavour of Mild Food

As IPAs are so versatile, there are many out there that are less intense and go well with milder, creamier foods such as a korma, a smooth cheese like brie or camembert, or classic desserts like an apple crumble or chocolate cake.

If you're looking for a more refreshing IPA, keep an eye out for the term 'session IPA' (or 'SIPA'). This indicates a beer with a lower alcohol content and a less bitter flavour meaning you can drink more of it in one session! It is also useful to look out for the term 'fresh-hopped', which means the hops made it from vine to beer in less than 24 hours.

Whether You're Eating or Not, There's an IPA for Every Occasion

Whether You're Eating or Not, There's an IPA for Every Occasion

IPA certainly doesn't have to be paired with food, and there are loads of IPAs out there that are delicious on their own. Having a few casual beers with friends is another great way to enjoy IPA, and that way, you can try lots of different ones to see what you like.

What's more, many IPAs are complex and multi-layered, and tasting them by themselves can reveal subtle flavours such as tropical fruit, pine and floral notes.

Become Familiar With the Names of a Couple of Breweries

Become Familiar With the Names of a Couple of Breweries

Post craft beer boom, there are so many breweries out there that it can seem overwhelming. However, the upside of this is that there is loads of choice, particularly when it comes to IPAs because it's one of the most popular craft beer styles

For a safe choice, look toward some of the larger, more established companies offering classic IPAs that have become popular in the mainstream. An excellent example of this is BrewDog, a Scottish brewery whose founders were early to the craft beer scene, having started in 2007. They brew a range of IPAs, and theirs is a good name to know when looking for quality and availability in most British supermarkets.

On the other hand, many fantastic IPAs come from smaller, newer breweries, which may offer a more diverse, unusual range of flavours and brewing methods. We will recommend some of the best of these IPAs in the product section below. Our main tip is to make sure that you remember the names of some of your favourite breweries so that you can keep discovering what they have to offer.

Know Your NEIPA from Your BIPA and Your DIPA from Your SIPA!

The heading above may seem pretty confusing, and browsing online shops for craft beers can often feel similar! Knowing the lingo will make the experience less daunting and enable you to relate these obscure acronyms to flavours that you love.

Learn The Basics of Beer Lingo

Learn The Basics of Beer Lingo

First, the basics. You've probably seen the abbreviation ABV before - this stands for "Alcohol by Volume" and refers to the percentage of the total volume of alcohol within the drink. IPAs usually range from about 5.5% to 9%, although they can go even higher. As a rule, the higher the ABV percentage, the stronger the taste of the IPA.

Another popular beer acronym that might come in useful is IBU, standing for International Bitterness Units. The higher the IBU rating, the more bitter the taste of the beer. IPAs usually stand somewhere between 40 and 70 on this scale, while to give you a comparison, a lager will typically be only 8 to 15 IBU.

Make Sure You Know These IPA Substyles

Make Sure You Know These IPA Substyles

Now, let's look at some of the most common IPA sub-styles. First, West Coast IPA and East Coast IPA (referring to the US coasts) are two styles that differ hugely. West Coast IPAs can reach as high as 80 IBU and are made with punchy, citrusy hops. Meanwhile, East Coast IPAs, are less bitter and use particular strains of yeast to produce softer flavours like bananas and tropical fruits, and has a pillowy, cloudy texture.

In contrast to both of these, English IPAs, the original form of this style of beer, are golden in colour and light and grassy in flavour. A few other useful IPA acronyms include DIPA, meaning Double IPA, referring to beers stronger in alcohol and flavour than standard IPAs, and SIPA referring to Session IPAs - these refreshing, highly drinkable beers are usually no more than 5% ABV.

Slightly more obscure but becoming ever more popular, NEIPAs, meaning New England IPAs, are unfiltered, resulting in a hazy texture, creamy mouthfeel and bold, juicy flavours. Finally, BIPA is used to denote Black IPA, a dark beer that is a hybrid between IPA and stout and has a combination of fresh hoppiness and roasted fruit flavours.

Decide Whether You'd Like to Try Any Specialist, Fruity or 'Milkshake' IPAs

Decide Whether You'd Like to Try Any Specialist, Fruity or 'Milkshake' IPAs

IPAs brewed using unorthodox ingredients, such as real fruits, vanilla, lactose or oats, have changed the game. Some connoisseurs may look down on these as not true examples of IPA - or, indeed, beer - but for many people, they are a great way to experiment and explore the endless fun, new flavour combinations. They also act as an easy introduction to the wonderful world of IPA.

Beers brewed with fruit have existed for centuries, but fruity IPAs are a relative newcomer to the market. You might be surprised by how many IPAs you can find nowadays with grapefruit, rhubarb or even banana on the ingredients list. These IPAs can be a delicious combination of tangy flavours and a sweetness that is not overpowering.

If you have a really sweet tooth, Milkshake or Smoothie IPAs will be right up your street. While there's no official definition of these substyles, they are often brewed with lactose, which doesn't ferment in the same way that other sugars do and therefore gives it a sweet, milky flavour. Fruits and spices are also added to create a bold, pudding-worthy IPA.

  • Top 10 Best Olive Oils in the UK 2021 (Belazu, November and More)
Top 10 Best Olive Oils in the UK 2021 (Belazu, November and More)
Here in the UK, we consume around 28 million litres of olive oil a year for cooking, salad dressings, and dipping bread; this liquid gold is delicious as well as healthy. But it is thought that a large percentage of this has been adulterated and can be classed as 'fake'. This can mean it's mixed with other oils, colouring chemicals have been added, or that old olive oil has been used so by the time it's in the supermarket, it's way below par. Standards set by the EU and the UK aren't particularly concerned with the authenticity of olive oil, and it doesn't help that there are numerous opportunities for tampering during production. To combat this, it's essential to choose extra-virgin olive oil, so we've created this guide focusing solely on that superior type of oil. We’ve also included some fantastic recommendations from Tesco and Amazon, from Italy, Greece, and Spain.
