A good deodorant or antiperspirant is essential for every man. It's something we all use, ever since that first lad in the school changing rooms brought out the Lynx Africa. You use it to give you confidence and comfort, keep you smelling fresh and clean, and most importantly to make sure you're feeling dry by banishing those soggy odours.
In this buying guide, we're going to be covering some of the biggest perspiration-preventing powerhouses, such as Dove, Bulldog & Kiehl's, as well as explaining what to avoid for sensitive skin. Whether you're looking for a spray, roll-on, or stick, you're in the right place as we'll introduce strong antiperspirants to eliminate excessive sweating, including natural options that are alcohol and aluminium-free!
There are some variables to look at before buying a new deodorant. You are going to want to consider such things as size and scent, as well as a formula – because you may need to dodge disagreeable ingredients like alcohol or aluminium, or prefer something that is environmentally conscious or natural.
Each of these formulas has advantages and disadvantages, and here we’re going to look at which of them aligns best with your skin type, lifestyle and environmental attitude.
This is the form you probably saw that original Lynx Africa in. It is by far the most common formula for deodorant on the market, mainly because it's just extremely convenient. It can be applied simply and quickly, it's smooth, leaving no wet or sticky patches, and best of all dry instantly, so you can apply and be on your way out in flash.
There are a few downsides to sprays though. First off, the spray can be a bit severe, so you'll want to make sure you’re well ventilated when applying. They're also pretty cumbersome, so if you're a man on the move often this might not be the best choice. Finally, the environment. Even though aerosols no longer contain CFC's they still contain harmful compounds that add to air pollution.
If, as we mentioned, you are a man on the move, then roll-ons might be the choice for you. They're favourably sized, meaning that you can toss them into your gym bag or carry-on luggage and off you go. They're also great for guys with sensitive skin as the main ingredient tends to be water, meaning that they'll keep your skin well hydrated.
The central issue with roll-ons, however, is that they can take a while to dry. So when you're up early in January getting ready for work, you'll need to hang about for a couple of minutes with no top on waiting for it to dry (brave!). They've also been known to produce a sticky consistency which can make it a bit of a chore when re-applying during the day.
The classic. Men have been warding off those nasty smells with a cream stick deodorant for as long as your Grandad has been using that Old Spice he has in the bathroom; a VERY long time. They're effortless in applying and give you complete control, meaning no waste. Again, the sticks tend to be compact so they're easy to carry around with you.
The big issue with stick deodorants is that they're notorious for leaving those dreaded white stains on your fresh work shirt - resulting in a compulsory wardrobe change before you've even left the house. This is because they don't tend to dry on to the skin as well as the other options.
Nowadays you can also pick one up that is no longer a stick form, but rather a balm that you squeeze out or scoop up and apply directly yourself.
We'd guess most of you keep your deodorant in the bathroom so that your cleansing routine can all be done in one go. Therefore, it would make sense to invest in a larger sized deodorant. But if you have a busy lifestyle that takes you from a business meeting to the gym, you're going to be looking for something a little more lightweight and mobile.
Most spray cans reach 250ml or more, meaning that they are quite big and bulky. They're also not allowed to be taken as carry-on luggage, which, if you're a frequent flyer, is something to take into account. On the other hand, roll-on and stick deodorants tend to come in at a nifty 30 to 50 ml, so you can carry them more conveniently.
To be at your most confident you need to feel comfortable with how you smell. Therefore, opting for a deodorant with an added scent would be a good way to go. Getting yourself some rich, earthy or woody aromas would keep those body odours eliminated all day.
On the other hand, you could decide to take the fresh route, getting yourself a lovely light and clean coconut or citrus fragrance that will have you smelling like a cool spring breeze.
However, if you've splashed on some of that expensive cologne you got for Christmas and you don't want your smells to clash, or you have skin that is easily troubled, you could always opt for an unscented product that will just stick to the task of dispelling those clammy natural smells.
Another ingredient you might want to give a miss is aluminium, which is very commonly included for its antiperspirant properties. Although there has been no direct link made, some believe that it can have an effect on breast tissues and could help establish tumour growth. Fortunately, there are many aluminium-free options out there, so you don't have to take a chance if you don't want to.
Now that you know about all the variations of deodorants it's time to take a look at our top picks. We have options suitable for everyone, from guys with sensitive skin to those of you that are always on the go.
