10 Best Champagnes UK 2021 | Taittinger, Moët & Chandon and More

Nothing livens up a party like a bottle of champagne! This type of sparkling wine comes from the Champagne region of northern France and is made from a mixture of Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay grapes. It's extra bubbly in comparison to other alcoholic beverages due to a complex fermentation process and can be sweet, dry, or even rosé - it all depends on the variety that you choose!

To help you find the right bottle for your budget, we've created a buying guide with everything you need to know: sweetness levels, vintage versus non-vintage, and calorie content. Then, we'll share our favourite offers from Amazon, Tesco, Asda, and Waitrose, from top brands like Bollinger, Taittinger, and Moët & Chandon. How to Choose a Champagne in the UK

Key Points to Consider

  1. Select the Right Level of Sweetness to Suit Your Taste Buds and Your Meals
  2. Understand The Differences in Quality and Price

1. Extra Brut, Brut or Demi-SEC: Select the Right Level of Sweetness to Pair a Champagne With Your Meal

1. Extra Brut, Brut or Demi-SEC: Select the Right Level of Sweetness to Pair a Champagne With Your Meal

Extra Brut Is Dry and Acidic, Pairing Well With Poultry and Rice Dishes

Extra brut champagne has the lowest level of sugar (less than 0.6%), making it a great option for those who aren't too keen on sweet alcohol. It tastes dry and slightly acidic, but it's less dry than regular brut.

Although the bitter flavour won't suit desserts, it works exceptionally well with savoury dishes such as succulent oven-roasted chicken or earthy mushroom risotto - this is definitely one to drink with dinner rather than on its own!

Brut Champagne Is Versatile and Tastes Great Alongside Most Types of Cuisine

As it only has 1.5% sugar, brut champagne is fairly dry-tasting with a citrus flavour. It's the most popular option available in supermarkets and online stores because it tastes unbelievably delicious with every type of cuisine!

The high acidity of this type of champagne cuts through oils and fats, so brut can be paired with anything from grilled fish to crispy fried tofu. It tastes nice on its own too, which is handy if you fancy a glass after work but don't feel like cooking.

For other great options to pair with fish, check out our 10 Best White Wines

Demi-SEC Is the Sweetest Variety of Champagne, Making It the Best Choice for Dessert

Fancy something a little bit sweeter? Demi-sec (literally meaning "half-dry") tends to contain between 3.3% and 5% sugar, so it'll hit the spot without being too sickly. It's usually fairly fruity in flavour and some brands even taste similar to red wine.

Demi-sec is the perfect choice for after dinner, as an accompaniment to a decadent dessert like chocolate cheesecake or sticky toffee pudding. You could even pop it into your picnic basket alongside a punnet of fresh strawberries for a boozy treat on a hot summer's day.

2. Select a Vintage Champagne for Celebrating a Wedding or a Special Occasion

2. Select a Vintage Champagne for Celebrating a Wedding or a Special Occasion

Most champagne is non-vintage, meaning it's made with a blend of grapes from different years. Non-vintage bottles make up the majority of the champagne market, so they tend to be inexpensive to buy and are the most cost-effective option if you like to have a glass of bubbly on a regular basis.

Vintage champagne though, where the grapes used in the fermentation process are all from the same top-quality harvest on a particular year, isn't as easy to find in the supermarket. As a result, it's usually much more expensive than your average bottle of sparkling wine - perfect for special occasions that require something fancy!

How to Open and Serve Champagne Like a Pro

How to Open and Serve Champagne Like a Pro

Serving Temperature

To ensure you get the most out of your purchase, it's essential to serve champagne at the right temperature. Despite what many people may think, serving champagne ice-cold actually numbs your taste buds. Make sure to take the bottle out of the fridge at least 10 minutes before serving, so it has a chance to warm up.

Additionally, serve your champagne in glasses that are room temperature (not pre-chilled), otherwise, you'll lose some of the sparkle. Follow these serving tips and you'll be able to really savour all of the wonderful aromas that your glass of bubbly has to offer.

Opening Champagne

  1. Ensure the bottle is chilled before opening
  2. Remove the foil by pulling the opening tab
  3. Hold the bottle by the neck and cover the cork with your thumb
  4. Press the base of the bottle close to your body to keep it secure
  5. Twist the wire tab counterclockwise until it becomes loose
  6. With a firm grip, twist the bottle and slightly tilt the cork to let the gas escape
  7. As the pressure builds, the cork will ease itself out of the neck of the bottle

Pouring Champagne

  1. Hold the glass at a 45º angle
  2. Pour slowly to limit bubbling and retain the champagne's natural effervescence
  3. As the glass fills, slowly straighten it to finish the pour in a vertical position
