Liquid and gel toilet cleaners are usually designed to be squirted under the rim of the toilet bowl, then left to trickle down, cleaning as they go. The gels, being thicker, cover that area more slowly, which means it needs to be left longer to ensure all of the bowl has been treated. However, once the product has run over that area, it sticks for longer and therefore has more contact time to work.
So, if you're in a rush and don't mind scrubbing, liquids are probably the better option, while gels are great if you're happy to leave the product to sit for longer and do more of the work. We like to make sure that not only is some product applied under the rim, but that some gets squirted into the toilet bowl too, to get working under the water right away.
Tablets and powders are a more concentrated format for toilet cleaners and they're really easy to just throw in for a powerful clean. They are a great way to tackle stubborn limescale and stains in the bowl, as they act entirely under the waterline. You can ensure that the solution gets to stains above the waterline by scrubbing a little with a toilet brush.
Toilet bombs (like bath bombs for your toilet!) are an eco-friendly option, made without harsh chemicals and are best used as an easy freshen-up in between deeper cleans. They fizz up when in contact with the water and release whichever essential oil fragrance they've been infused with.
What if there was a product out there that would clean your loo for you every time you flush, saving you lots of scrubbing and reducing your workload? Happily, there is such a wonderous product!
While they do not completely eliminate all toilet cleaning jobs, these solid blocks, when placed in your cistern or hung in the bowl, will gradually release active ingredients to prevent limescale and urine sediment build-up and keep your bathroom smelling lovely!
Nothing makes a toilet look dirtier than staining. It shows up in sharp contrast against the white porcelain and it really undermines the rest of your cleaning efforts! The persistent stains found in toilet bowls are due to a combination of limescale, urine sediments and rust.
Limescale is a build up of calcium carbonate, which forms hard, stone-like areas inside water pipes, boilers, kettles and toilets. Plus, unflushed urine reacts with the water in the toilet bowl, forming smelly flakes of urine sediment - yuck! Staining can also be worsened by aging, rusty metal work on your loo.
There are a variety of cleaners to specifically target limescale - these contain acidic ingredients to react with the alkali limescale, dissolving it completely. Look for ingredients such as hydrochloric acid for powerful anti-limescale action. These will also break down the urine sediments and rust deposits. Good old-fashioned chlorine bleach will whiten any other stains left behind. Then, remove any rusty fittings and replace with stainless steel. Sorted.
As we all know, loos can smell a bit less than floral fresh. Most toilet cleaners will tackle this just by giving it a thorough clean as most of the smell is due to the deposits. Simply ensuring your toilet is cleanly flushed (assisted by a wipe round with loo roll) after every use, will tackle the cause of the odours.
Thankfully, gone are the days when toilet cleaners reeked strongly of fake pine forests! There are many lovely scented products now available, and many of the leading products come in a range of scents to suit your tastes and/or match your bathroom décor!
When it comes to cleaning the toilet, most of us reach for the most powerful cleaners we can find in a bid to blitz the germs. We often don't think of eco-friendly toilet cleaners as being strong enough to tackle the loo. However, they have come a long way in recent times and there are now many products highly effective at keeping limescale, stains and germs at bay without resorting to a host of toxic chemicals.
Not only are these non-toxic products safer for your family, but they also have less impact on the environment. Many contain plant-based ingredients, such as citric and acetic acids, and are biodegradable, so they don't persist in waterways or the ocean. The ingredients within are still in a concentrated form however, so do still store and use eco-friendly cleaning products with care, especially around pets and children.

Give your toilet a deep-clean, with a toilet-cleaning product, once or twice a week. Of course, if anyone in the household is ill, clean the loo at least daily.
To remove long-established brown stains, you need to use a specialist product, labelled as 'limescale remover'. It is essential that you leave the product to soak for the time stated on the instructions (and that you keep pets and kids away from the toilet during this time).
