Survival horror games create tension by having the player fend for their life. This could involve staying alive in a dystopian setting or having to escape the clutches of a monster. Survival Horror games rely on making the player feel part of their strange worlds.
Once you’re immersed, they crank up the fear by using jump scares, snap decisions, and the use of ghoulish characters who are rarely seen, but when they are, they send the player running in the opposite direction.
These games tend to be tactical and stealth-based in order to make sure the player is always on edge, although many have their fair share of action and combat too. In these types of survival horror, the scares come from the enemies the player encounters and the creepy settings.
Action horror games involve the most combat, making them best for those who enjoy pulverising wave after wave of enemies! These require you to defend yourself against a host of enemies as you make your way through the game. You’ll be given the tools to do the job, but if you’re not on your A-game, you’ll be overwhelmed before you can fire a shot.
Filled with excitement and jump scares abound, you're likely to be on the edge of your seat from beginning to end! These are fast paced games, and require the player to be constantly aware of their surroundings. Action Horror games tend to give plenty of ammunition, which helps to eliminate the terrifying creatures they will encounter.
If you love battling enemies and going on quests, we recommend these action-packed JRPGs for PS4.
In an exploration-style horror game, your objective is to collect items or puzzle pieces and uncover hidden truths. These games are ideal for those who like to fully immerse themselves in the universe and escape from reality. Some games even provide an open world where you can freely roam to your heart's content!
By allowing the playing freedom to roam wherever they please, this actually creates more tension because the player won’t know what’s around the corner. These hellish worlds prevent the player from knowing too much, by obscuring their levels in fog and by using darker colours to prevent objects being differentiated by their surrounds.

For the ultimate creepy atmosphere, look for a game with an eerie setting, twisted character designs or classic monsters like zombies and vampires. Or, if you need a break from a non-stop frightfest, try a title with a generous helping of wit and humour to lighten the mood.
Zombie games are so popular because they provide all the elements of horror. They present an enemy who is unconcerned by what you do, they’re indifferent; they keep coming regardless of how many you kill; they will get to you eventually.
Games of this type often revolve around survival, which is one of the most popular game formats. How will you survive the onslaught? In your bedroom, or the fort you’ve built? Although it sounds antithetical to a horror game, there are plenty out there that provide laughs whilst still being able to freak out the player. Back 4 Blood is a great example.
Knowing whether to pick a single or multi-player game when it comes to horror titles can be tough. We recommend single-player modes for a truly terrifying experience, as playing solo significantly increases how vulnerable you feel while roaming around in spooky settings.
Whilst multiplayer games may lessen the tension, many of us find it much more fun to play games alongside others, whether online or offline. For a shared experience, look for games that offer multiplayer options so you can team up to eliminate hordes of zombies or track down ephemeral ghosts.
Most horror games tend to be single-player for this reason. Things are scarier when we’re on our own. Trawling through an unknown world without any support from our friends is frightening but this has its own reward: a spine-tingling horror experience. Especially when the lights are off and the curtains are drawn.
Those with PlayStation VR (or those considering getting it) should look for games with compatible features. Virtual reality puts players directly into the game, offering a completely immersive experience ― when it comes to horror titles, what's more bone-chilling than being absorbed inside a totally terrifying virtual world?
Some games are compatible with PlayStation VR but can be played without virtual reality settings. However, others specifically require a PSVR headset in order to work at all, so make sure to check the game's compatibility before buying. Be careful not to overdo it when playing in VR.
Due to how lifelike VR can make games seem, many people feel their senses being overwhelmed. Be sure to make time for periods of rest. There’s no other experience quite like VR when it comes to horror titles. The immediacy of the terror, and the intimacy the player feels with the world, make for a thrilling journey. Do so at your own peril!

In the UK, games are categorised using the PEGI (Pan European Game Information) classification system. On the front of the packaging, you'll notice a coloured box with a number, which denotes the minimum age deemed appropriate to play that game. Due to the nature of the content, most horror games are rated PEGI 16 or above.
Buyers should be aware that PEGI 18 games are intended to be played by adults only and can get pretty graphic in terms of violence and gore. So, under no circumstance should these games be given to children. Responsible adults should always make sure that their children aren't exposed to games with a higher age rating.
That said, it's increasingly difficult to prevent children from being exposed to trends in media, such as Amnesia and Slenderman, so parental guidance is necessary. The opposite can sometimes be true: Nintendo, for example, is renowned for being extremely strict with its age ratings, so some games may seem to have a higher rating for something you'd be happy to let your child play.
This ranking has been compiled by the writing team at mybest UK via careful evaluation of the points made in the buying guide and thorough research of each product and comparing multiple verified customer reviews across the EC sites used.
