10 Best Night Lights UK 2024 | Paediatrician Reviewed

A dark bedroom can be a scary place for many children, so a night light is an essential accessory to put young minds at ease and allow them to drift off in peace, promoting sleep and reducing episodes. Night lights can also help children find their drink or way to the bathroom through a dark hallway, and provide just enough light to allow parents to check in on their little ones without waking anyone up.

Whether you're after a simple coloured or white plug-in-the-wall night light, or a sophisticated sunset-replicating, lullaby-singing musical comforter, you'll find something from our selection of the top 10 night lights to buy in the UK. Our picks are suitable for newborn babies, toddlers, and 6 year olds alike, and are available from online retailers such as Amazon and John Lewis.

How to Choose a Night Light in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. Consider Which Lights Are Suitable for Your Child’s Age
  2. Opt for Mains or Battery Powered Depending on Where it Will be Used
  3. For Children Who Struggle to Sleep, Try a Night Light That Plays Soothing Songs
1

Look For a Warm Toned Night Light That’s Suitable for Your Child’s Developmental Age

Children's needs change and develop a lot in early life, and the best night light for them may well also change during these important months and years.

For example, night lights whose glow and sound effects mimic the womb are obviously aimed more at newborns, whereas portable lights that can be picked up and carried are great for toddlers and young children who may want something to take with them to the bathroom in the night.

While some night lights are very much targeted at one specific age of child, others may cleverly try to bridge this gap by incorporating design features that can adapt as your child gets older. In our product descriptions, we'll include a guide as to what age a night light is suited for, but it's still worth thinking about the specific needs of your child.

Never assume that your child will need a night light. A newborn doesn’t understand the difference between day and night and will learn the sleep cycle as they grow (hopefully matching your own sleep cycle sooner than later!).

A hormone called melatonin helps with getting over to sleep. This is a natural hormone produced by a gland in the brain called the pineal gland. Reducing the disruption to this hormone is essential - blue light can interfere with this - reducing screen time a few hours before bed will also help not disrupt melatonin production. So use only warm yellow or red-toned night lights.

Choose a Mains-Powered Night Light for an Uninterrupted Glow, or a Battery-Powered Night Light to Use on the Go

Choose a Mains-Powered Night Light for an Uninterrupted Glow, or a Battery-Powered Night Light to Use on the Go
Source:johnlewis.com

Go For a Mains-Powered Night Light to Ensure It Stays on Until Morning

In the case of mains-powered night lights, the principal advantage is that you know the night light will stay on and working throughout the night, ready and waiting for your child to use. The length of the power leads supplied will vary, but should be sufficient to reach various points in your child's room.

By plugging into the mains, there's no concern about running out of power partway through the night, or getting your child settled down for bed only to realise the battery is dead. This variety can also be cheaper to run when compared with buying batteries, and will last longer than those with rechargeable batteries that may lose capacity over time.

Opt For a Battery-Powered Night Light for Overnight Stays

Battery-powered night lights may run off either a rechargeable internal battery, or replaceable AA or AAA batteries. The advantage of this power source is the greater flexibility it gives you in terms of where the night light is placed, especially if plug sockets are in short supply in your child's bedroom or are simply placed too far from their bedside table.

This type of night light will often be more easily transportable – a useful consideration for trips and holidays, or if your child regularly sleeps in different houses. The downside is, of course, that you have to keep on top of charging or replacing the batteries, and no battery power can mean a significantly disrupted bedtime.

If your child suffers from separation anxiety or has become dependent on a night light for home comforts that support sleep, then considering a night light that meets the more transportable needs might even help when staying over at a family or friends house, or even when on holiday.

3

Try a Night Light That Plays Soothing Audio or Songs to Help Lull Your Child to Sleep

Try a Night Light That Plays Soothing Audio or Songs to Help Lull Your Child to Sleep
Source:amazon.co.uk

People have been singing lullabies to their children for millennia, so it makes sense that many night lights incorporate features which can play soothing audio recordings to help send your child off to the land of nod. As well as songs, different types of white or pink noise may be on the playlist, such as the sound of the sea, or even a vacuum cleaner.

As each child and their bedtime and sleeping routine is different, these sounds when included are entirely optional, along with the possibility of setting the volume they are played at.

Some can also be programmed to play when the night light's sensors detect that your child has woken up or is crying, to help lull them back to sleep. It'll just be a case of checking the exact specifications if you're keen to include certain features.

There is plenty of research supporting that the electrical connections within the brain that help with sleep hygiene result in the balance of sleep hormones reducing stress hormones (such as cortisol) that wake us all up in the morning. You might even find you fall into deep sleep if your infant is sleeping in the same room as you, with the music playing quietly in the background.

Rechargeable Penguin Night Light That Adapts as Your Child Grows

This sweet penguin is a lovely, well-designed night light that can be used in different ways as your child grows. For babies, the egg-shaped light radiates a dimmable soft glow. As your child gets older and may want to read or visit the bathroom in the night, the same light can be removed from the base and taken around the house or under the covers.

The light itself is tactile and soft for little hands, and lasts up to ten hours between charges. With such well-thought-out versatility, it's sure to be a favourite bedtime companion for many years.

Fully Programmable Sleep Trainer for Young Children

Aimed at children aged 2 years and up, this affordable night light with sleep trainer is also a great way to help children start to tell the time. Throughout the night, Ollie the Owl appears asleep on the display, but when it's time to get up, Ollie wakes up too and the display turns yellow.

You can programme different wake-up times for weekdays and the weekend, and adjust the brightness of the display. The night light also comes with an illustrated book designed to help children want to stay in bed longer.

As well as an orange glow, there's a soft, low blue light setting to work as an ambient bedside light during story time and create a calming environment to prepare your child for sleep. All in a cute, cheerful little design.

Soft and Cuddly Light-up Companion for Young Babies

Created specifically for young babies, cuddly Ewan has a range of tricks up his sleeve to help newborns drift off. As a night light, he emits a very soft, rosy glow and sound effects that create a womb-like environment that should help settle down the smallest babies into a gentle slumber.

And if your baby stirs in the night, Ewan's intelligent sensors activate to resettle them – hopefully without you needing to get out of bed. As an added bonus, with his removable control pod, Ewan is completely machine washable.

Night Light and Alarm Clock to Encourage a Good Sleep Routine

Much more than just a night light, this little cloud also functions as a sleep trainer and alarm clock to encourage a better sleep routine. Different colour glows and soothing sounds let your child know when it's time for bed, almost time to get up, and time to rise and shine.

As a night light, it can be programmed to operate at three brightness levels. All of this can be set using the simple controls on the base, with power coming from either 4 AA batteries or a USB cable (although a USB to plug adapter is not included).

Discreet Night Light That Attaches to Your Lamp or Ceiling Fixture

This clever alternative to a stand-alone night light works by attaching directly into an existing lamp or a ceiling fitting. As such, it's less obtrusive than a normal night light – useful for rooms where children only sleep occasionally or for children who might feel too old for a babyish night light.

Operated via the existing light switch, this nightlight offers adjustable brightness levels in a soft, comforting glow. One very important thing to note: the Gro-light only works with bayonet-style light fittings, and not with screw-in fittings. It also does not work with dimmer switches.

Clip-on Cot Night Light With Soothing Sounds

Ollie the Owl can clip on to the side of your baby's crib or is soft and gentle enough to be left alongside them as they sleep, the mellow glow from his belly making for a soothing environment for your little one to fall asleep. And if they wake in the night, Ollie's sensors pick up on your baby's cries and set off sounds and lullabies to calm them and help them drift off again.

The brightness of the light and the volume of the sounds are fully adjustable to suit your baby. And for extra versatility Ollie is powered by a rechargeable battery, allowing him to be placed and taken anywhere. Although he might look cute, this is not the best option for properly lighting your child's room because the light is hidden behind a layer of fur.

A Popular 2-In-1 Night Light and Room Thermometer

An updated version of the bestselling original, the Groegg2 provides peace of mind for parents wanting to quickly check that their baby's room is the correct temperature. The clear and easy-to-read digital display shows the precise temperature, with the ambient light changing from blue to bright red to reflect whether the room is too cold or too hot.

The light can be set at four brightness levels, and the soft touch but strong silicone design looks good but will also withstand any knocks and jolts as your child gets older and more investigative. Power comes from either the mains, or via a more transportable USB lead. The light is quite big though, and might be too much for some children.

Spill-Proof LED Sippy Cup With Night Light

If thirst is a major reason your child wakes up in the night, the Litecup could be a nifty and relatively inexpensive solution. Available in a multitude of colours, the cup contains an LED in its base to provide an ambient glow, as well as help your child locate their drink in the night.

The easy-flow valve is spill-proof whilst allowing 360° drinking, and the cup is made from BPA- and latex-free plastic. Unfortunately, it's not dishwasher safe when the light is in, and there is only one setting for the light.

Plug-in Night Light With Automatic Sensor

No bells or whistles here – this simple, understated night light plugs directly into a wall socket to provide soft background illumination to your child's room or guide the way in a dark hallway. The automatic light sensor comes on when it's dark, and at the touch of a button, you can set it to light up in either warm white, blue or purple.

The clever design allows you to use the same socket for other devices at the same time and sits discreetly against the wall (although still could be a target for curious toddlers). While good as a basic light, it may work best in conjunction with a more sophisticated, versatile model.

Are Night Lights Safe to Leave On All Night?

Most night lights are specifically designed for all-night use, however, it's still important to follow the manufacturer's instructions on your specific product in order to keep your home and family safe! If you're worries about leaving the light on, opt for now with a timer or sensor to keep your mind at ease.

What Is the Best Colour for a Night Light?

Our circadian rhythm regulates our sleep cycle and ensures we stay healthy and fulfilled by our sleep patterns. Exposing ourselves to harsh light at nighttime interferes with this balance. No light at all will ensure our circadian rhythm remains undisturbed, but if you must use a night light, red light is the least detrimental option!
