How to Choose a Computer Monitor in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. Select Specifications Based On How You Intend to Use the Monitor
  2. Look Out for Which Ports the Monitor Uses
  3. Consider a Monitor With Portrait Mode
1

Select the Monitor Resolution, Screen Size and Panel Type Based on Your Intended Use or Area of Work

Select the Monitor Resolution, Screen Size and Panel Type Based on Your Intended Use or Area of Work

A Higher Number of Pixels Is Always Better, Especially if You Work With Images or Video

A monitor’s resolution is the total number of picture elements (or pixels) available on the screen. Modern monitors hold several million pixels, also called megapixels. You will see the resolution written as width by height, such as 2048 × 1080 pixels. The higher the numbers, the higher the resolution.

For reference, full HD is 1920 x 1080. This is a safe lower boundary, but the larger the monitor, the more resolution you'll need to keep images looking clear. Other shorthands you'll regularly encounter are WQHD (also known as 2K or QHD) at around 2560 x 1440, or 4K, at the higher 3840 x 2160.

If you work with images, photos, or videos and image quality is important to your work, you'll want as high a resolution as your budget allows, as a high number of pixels is important for a clear and sharp image. However, if you mainly work with text, lower resolutions will be better to save on your bank balance.

Most monitors sold these days are either in FullHD (aka 1080p) or 4K resolution, and you often need to choose between these two resolutions. If you wish to go with a larger monitor such as 27 or 32 inches, you might consider investing in a 4K display over a 1080p display

The larger the display is, the easier it is to see the individual pixels on the screen. If you choose to buy a 32” 1080p monitor, you are almost guaranteed to see individual pixels, which can annoy some people.

Ultrawide Screens of 35-49" Are Great for Multitasking, or Go for Around 25" If You Want a Good All-Rounder

The size of the monitor itself is measured in length in inches from the bottom left to the top right corner. Modern monitors start at about 22 inches and can go up to ultrawide 35 or even 49-inch screens.

24 to 27 inches is generally considered the “sweet spot” that gives a good space for most application work, so most people can look for monitors of this size. However, a larger screen is better if you are a multitasker that uses several apps at the same time or a creative who works with detailed images.

It is good to keep in mind that a larger monitor requires more distance from the eyes. A good rule of thumb is that if a display is 20 inches wide, your eyes should be at least 20 inches away from the screen. This way, your eyes won’t get straining.

Many ultra-wide screens can require a lot of extra dept from the desk, which could mean they don’t even fit on a smaller desk. It is often better to start with a 27” monitor and then upgrade to bigger if needed. For most people, a 27” monitor is ideal since it can easily fit on almost any desk while a 32” cannot.

Look Into the Panel for an Idea of Colour and Brightness: TN for Gamers, IPS for Creatives and VA Panels as a Budget Option

To make an image, your monitor shines light through a liquid crystal display (LCD) of pixels, also known as panels. The type of panel controls the speed that pixels can change when the computer tells them to. The panel is also important for creating accurate colours from the computer's instructions. The 3 main types of monitor panel to consider are TN, IPS, and VA.

  • TN stands for twisted nematic panels. TN panels, used by many professional gamers, can handle many fast 3D objects moving around on the screen but don't display colour and brightness as well as other LCD displays. They also only work well when you're looking at them straight-on. Although quite affordable, they’re generally not recommended for professional use.
  • In-plane switching monitors (IPS), also found in most modern smartphone screens, have great colour accuracy and brightness and can display from any angle. IPS panels struggle to handle fast, high-resolution games though. For a rich and bright screen, we recommend IPS panels to creatives and most other home workers as well.
  • VA or vertical alignment monitors are middle ground panel technology. VA panels have reasonable speed and colour quality. Therefore, they are generally the cheapest options available. If your work is almost exclusively text-based, then a VA monitor is a good budget option.

For most people out there, a monitor with IPS technology is the most suitable option to go with. It offers the best from all worlds, whether you do photo editing or even some gaming.

You only need to know the answer to one simple question; are you planning to dedicate this new monitor to playing high demanding games or not? If the answer is yes, you need a monitor that supports higher refresh rates between 120Hz and 240Hz. For video or photo editing, pretty much any regular IPS screen out there is more than good enough.

HDMI Is the Standard, but USB-C Ports Are for Apple Users and Display Ports for Multiple Display Connections

HDMI Is the Standard, but USB-C Ports Are for Apple Users and Display Ports for Multiple Display Connections

Before you buy a monitor you should confirm how you will connect it to your laptop. Almost all modern laptops can use an HDMI cable, which is the standard for digital TVs and other entertainment devices. The cables are available everywhere and will work with a variety of devices, so are therefore the easiest option. They also give a reliable picture and sound quality.

A newer connection type is DisplayPort (DP) which has a similar image quality to HDMI. In terms of differences, HDMI, unlike DisplayPort, can send audio information back to the computer. DisplayPort, however, can send information to many separate screens, so is ideal for large multi-screen advertising boards. You might want to get a monitor with both HDMI and DP if you want the flexibility to be able to use both.

USB-C, another connection type that is more recent, can send information and electrical power between the monitor and computer. This can be very handy as it cuts down on the number of cables that can clutter up your home office. If you have a modern MacBook, a USB-C is a great choice as you can charge your device from the monitor while working.

Jani Ahonen

DisplayPort became a very popular port on Apple devices such as Macbooks when Apple removed the standard HDMI ports from Macbooks about five years ago. However, in October 2021, Apple brought back the HDMI port to Macbook Pros, and the future for HDMI ports looks promising on new Macs.

Today DisplayPorts are slowly beginning to die off from the market, and instead of buying a new DisplayPort cable, consider getting a USB-C to HDMI port cable or adapter instead.

Monitors With Portrait Mode Are Great for Coders and Gamers as Well as Those Who Do a Lot of Reading or Writing

Monitors With Portrait Mode Are Great for Coders and Gamers as Well as Those Who Do a Lot of Reading or Writing
Source:amazon.co.uk

Intend to do a lot of writing or reading with your monitor? Consider getting a screen that can rotate into portrait mode. With more vertical workspace you won't need to reach for the mouse to scroll up and down so much, getting more done in less time. The verticality is also convenient for coders, or gamers that want a second monitor.

If you're interested in using this feature, look for monitors that have this function built-in: they will instantly adjust the computer display when rotated so you won't have to worry about fiddling with the settings if you often change between horizontal and portrait.

Note that some monitors might require you to unplug all cables before changing the monitor's orientation. This means that many monitors are meant to remain in either landscape or portrait orientation all the time.

So if you need to change the monitor orientation multiple times each day, you need to research whether that particular monitor is suitable for constantly switching between two orientations or not.

This monitor is very well-priced for what it offers, which is a solid workhorse for at-home workers that is also capable of budget gaming. It also features reduced flicker and a dedicated reading mode to reduce eye strain.

On the gaming front, the monitor compensates for a standard refresh rate with LG's Dynamic Action Sync to reduce input lag and Radeon Free Sync to avoid screen tears or stutters. The screen size is relatively small though, and the resolution standard, so those workers in visual mediums or tech lovers might want to look for something larger.
