How to Choose a Chai Tea in the UK

Key Point to Consider

  1. Choose a Tea Depending on Your Preferred Strength and Time Constraints
  2. Consider the Variety of Flavours Available

1. Choose Between Loose Leaf, Tea Bag or Powder, Depending on Your Preferred Strength of Flavour and Time Constraints

1. Choose Between Loose Leaf, Tea Bag or Powder, Depending on Your Preferred Strength of Flavour and Time Constraints

If You Don’t Mind the Effort, Opt for Loose Leaf Tea for an Intense, Aromatic Flavour

Chai was made to be consumed as a loose leaf tea. That's because dried loose tea leaves generally have a more intense, aromatic flavour, making them much more pleasurable to drink.

However, brewing loose leaf chai will require a tea strainer or infuser and takes a bit more effort and care to prepare than your bog standard tea bag. Loose-leaf teas also tend to be more costly, but if you're lucky enough to have it within your budget, the flavour pay off is definitely worth it.

If you love tea and value quality, it makes sense to buy the best tea you can - whether that's high quality, sustainable teabags, or loose leaf tea. Chai blends are usually made with a careful blend of tea leaves and spices, so loose leaf chai will have a better quality of flavour through greater quantities of ingredients.

Look at the tea company's sustainability credentials, too. Tea People are great because they are a social enterprise and their loose leaf tea and teabags are the same high quality of tea leaves, herbs and spices.

Tea Bags Are Perfect for Those Who Need Something Quick, Making Them Ideal for Those With Busy Schedules

For yummy chai on a budget, why not try tea bags? They come in great value packs, impart a pretty decent flavour and save both time and effort which can be useful if you like to drink your tea at work.

Tea bags are generally quite far removed from how masala chai is typically served and taste more subtle, or dare we say slightly weaker than loose leaf. However, with the right blend of spices, certain supermarket chai bags still manage to pay a respectful nod to the traditional Indian drink.

There are some great chai teabags available that will give you that distinctive, spicy taste if you want to get a sense of the taste of chai. It's not the same as traditional chai blends but you still get the combination of spices and warmth that you would with more traditional, loose leaf chai.

You can even have it cold as an iced summer drink as an alternative to the warming, hot tea and milk blend. It's all down to personal taste and what's convenient for you!

If You Have a Sweet Tooth, Pick a Powdered Chai to Create Delicious, Smooth and Creamy Lattes

To save even more preparation time, you could consider picking up a powdered chai. Although the sweet and mild flavour is about as far from the traditional tea as you can possibly get, if you have developed a taste for a chai latte, then powder is your best bet to recreate it.

Unfortunately, these types of powdered hot drinks tend to be packed with extra sugars, which not only affects the overall flavour, but may be detrimental to those looking to cut down on dietary sugars.

Look at the ingredients of your chai and see what suits you. Good chai should just be a blend of earthy black tea leaves with warming spices. You can always sweeten to taste, as the traditional chai method would be to have a milky brew, sweetened with sugar. I personally find the spices, such as cinnamon are enough to sweeten the chai for my tastes.

2. Consider Your Preferred Flavours: Some Chais Stay True to Their Eastern Roots, Whereas Others Include Additional Ingredients for Added Flavour

2. Consider Your Preferred Flavours: Some Chais Stay True to Their Eastern Roots, Whereas Others Include Additional Ingredients for Added Flavour

Prefer the Authentic Eastern Flavours? Opt For an Indian Chai Blend That Includes Cardamom, Cinnamon, Clove, Ginger and Peppercorns

To really sample the best of what authentic chai is all about, pick a black tea blended with green cardamom pods, cinnamon, ground cloves, ground ginger and black peppercorns.

This flavour combination is as bright and refreshing as it is heart-warming and reassuring. These teas let you enjoy a recipe closest to traditional Indian masala chai, without going rogue and losing the magic.

Cinnamon, cloves, ginger, cardamom and peppercorns are all traditionally used in blending chai and each spice has a number of health benefits to boot; good for circulation, heart health, helping you when trying to fight off colds and flu, and when turmeric is used, it is known as an effective natural remedy for soothing inflammation.

Combined, they are a traditional remedy and have been considered beneficial for health for many years. A good cup of chai is comforting when tired or feeling unwell, especially in the colder weather.

If You Like Experimenting With Ingredients, Try a Blend With Vanilla for Something Sweet or One With Turmeric for an Immunity Boost

If you decide to experiment and slightly veer away from the classic chai flavours, perhaps you might want to try a more subtle spice. Additions such as vanilla and turmeric add a new element to your tea, while respecting the hot, spicy essence of a traditional chai.

Vanilla chai is sweet and comforting, whereas turmeric chai has the slightest bitterness that (literally) gets the blood pumping. Despite adding different elements, both blend fantastically with the typical base flavours. In addition to its pleasant flavour, turmeric is known for its antioxidant properties and may even help strengthen your immune system.

Vanilla is such a soothing and comforting taste - I love black teas flavoured with vanilla and think vanilla and traditional chai spices make the perfect combination for a rich, comforting drink

I personally like to add a little dairy-free milk alternative sometimes too - oat milk is a tasty, creamy option if you don't want to go down the traditional milky chai route. This also works well in iced drinks and milkshakes.

For Those Who Prefer Something a Little More Contemporary, Choose a Blend Featuring Liquorice and Star Anise

Check whether your chai tea contains added liquorice or star anise and if so, decide whether those are flavours you think you might like to try. These are not typical chai ingredients but are included as a base flavour in a number of herbal teas.

These ingredients can make or break your tea, especially if you've got an idea of what kind of flavours and aroma you're expecting, as they both have a strong, noticeable taste that not everyone is keen on.

To keep it plant-based, try our Best Oat Milks!

The aniseed flavour is a personal choice. Teas that contain star anise or liquorice do offer added health benefits, such as lowering blood pressure - you should be mindful of this if you already suffer from low blood pressure and it's not advised for pregnant or nursing women.

The aniseed flavour can be a refreshing kick to a tea, but it's definitely a love-it-or-hate-it taste. I personally don't mind a little aniseed flavour but I am put off when it overpowers other flavours in tea, which it can do at times.

Rachael's Tips on Enjoying Chai All Year Round

Rachael's Tips on Enjoying Chai All Year Round

'I personally really like vanilla chai or any black tea flavoured with natural vanilla or cinnamon flavours. I enjoy it all year round, as it also makes a great milk/dairy alternative-based iced drink in the summer and warmer weather, as well as making a very comforting hot drink in the cold weather.'

'I also like to mix and match and make up my own blends with other loose leaf teas and different herbs and spices. Why not try it for yourself?'

Want to Make a Chai Tea Latte at Home? Here's How!

Want to Make a Chai Tea Latte at Home? Here's How!

Keen to use your new tea bags or loose-leaf chai in a warming recipe? Here's how you can easily create a sumptuous chai latte at home!

The following recipe serves 4. As a dairy-free alternative, we recommend using coconut milk and for an added punch, add the fresh spices to your newly-purchased chai tea.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 8 cardamom pods
  • 4 cloves
  • 6 black peppercorns
  • 2 cm of fresh ginger
  • 3 black tea bags or chai tea bags
  • 500 ml whole milk or coconut milk
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar (optional)

Method:

  1. Toast the spices in a dry frying pan until they become fragrant, add them to a saucepan filled with 500ml of boiled water, fresh ginger, and tea bags, then leave to infuse for 10 minutes.
  2. In a separate pan, begin to heat 500ml of milk, slowly sprinkling in the brown sugar and stirring until it fully dissolves. Once it starts lightly steaming, you can froth using a milk foamer or whisk to create that signature chai latte foam.
  3. Strain the tea into four mugs or heat-proof glasses, then pour in the milk on top. Stir before finishing with the milk foam and a pinch of cinnamon.
  4. Drink and enjoy!

Coffee is the most popular drink worldwide and, in the UK, we drink almost 100 million cups per day! Whether you need it to start your morning or you simply enjoy the taste, it's hard to find the time to grind your own beans and prepare a pour-over. You can, of course, wait around in an expensive cafe for your morning joe, but that can easily feel like more hassle than it's worth. But that doesn't just leave you with the instant option. A considerably more enticing option than instant is the coffee bag, a sustainable way to enjoy barista-quality coffee without the cost and time spent waiting around. They work exactly the same as a tea bag: simply pop it in a mug, pour in hot water, and wait for it to brew - easy as that! We've picked some of the best coffee bags from top brands like Taylors and Lyons, which are all available from online UK sites such as Amazon, Waitrose and Tesco.
