Paper shredders have become a necessity nowadays, as they help to protect our sensitive personal data from falling into the wrong hands. Whether it’s bank statements, staff salary details, or business-related documents that you need to shred, you'll want to buy a top-quality machine with great reviews.
However, choosing the best shredder can be tough - there are loads of options out there, from simple cross-cut devices to heavy-duty machines that can cut up credit cards and CDs too. So, we’ve put together this nifty little buying guide and a selection of our favourites to buy at Amazon, eBay, and Argos. Although paper shredders don't always come cheap, you'll be sure to find one on our list that's suitable for your needs and budget!
A recommendation service that carefully researches each product and consults with experts across many disciplines. We are constantly creating new content to provide the best shopping experience from choosing ‘cosmetics’ to ‘food and drink’, ‘home appliances’ to ‘kids and baby’ products, reaching users all across the United Kingdom.
Table of Contents
The best way to determine that your documents will be shredded securely is by checking a product's P Rating. The P Rating means how many pieces a document will be shredded into, and the rating goes from level 1 to level 7. Take a look at the most common options below to find what might work best for you.
The required capacity of the shredder bin will depend on how much you plan on using it. If you’re running your own business and you’re the only person using the shredder then around 3-10 litres should be fine.
However, if you're buying a product for the whole office to use, you'll want something bigger! We’d recommend approximately 15 litres for every 5 users - or more if each person shreds a lot of documents.
Looking for more office equipment to work efficiently? Why not invest in a good inkjet or laser printer?
Something that'll make your shredding experience much smoother is knowing how many sheets can be fed into the machine in one go - this is called the maximum page load.
For single person use or a small office, a model that can shred 5-10 sheets at a time will be perfectly suitable. In larger offices though, it goes without saying that the more sheets that can be loaded, the better! Some of our recommended products can take up to 16 pages, which is great for larger businesses.
Another handy feature that many modern paper shredders have is the ability to cut up other forms of data like out-of-date credit cards or CDs with precious information.
This type of shredder is also great for those of us who are clumsy enough to leave staples or paperclips attached to a document, as these can also be shredded without damaging the machine. If you like the sound of this feature, keep an eye out for it in the specification tables below each product review.

This product is our favourite from the Powershred range - it's the best device out there for shredding confidential documents, so you'll never have to worry about anybody getting hold of your info.
The SafeSense technology ensures that the machine will be disabled when touched, and it has wheels so everyone in the office can access it when needed. Additionally, it has a massive 30 litre capacity, meaning less time spent emptying it. For these reasons, this product takes our number 1 spot!
If you work from home but still manage to get through a lot of shredding, then this sleek-looking device by Rexel could be the perfect fit. In addition to the generous 15 litre capacity, it can take up to 8 sheets at a time.
Rexel even offers a 2-year warranty against all defects and a 3-year warranty for the cutters, so should you have any issues then you'll be able to either get it fixed or replaced. We think this is brilliant, especially considering the low price!
With room for 23 litres of paper, this product by Fellowes has a really large bin capacity. If you're part of a big office where there's a lot of shredding going on, you can't beat this machine for efficiency.
Not only does this product shred paper, it also cuts up credit cards and CDs with ease. Fellowes even claim that it's 100% jam-proof, making it a very appealing device indeed.
This offering from Bonsaii is superb value for money, as its features easily match those of more expensive models. It has top-notch security, a large capacity, and can shred 14 sheets in one go.
The main reasons it's not higher in the ranking are its inability to cut up other data and its lack of wheels. But if you're looking to strictly shred paper in one location, we definitely recommend it!
This shredder may be expensive, but we say it's worth every penny! The SafeSense technology means that the device stops automatically if somebody touches the paper feed. Plus, it shreds up to 14 sheets at a time and has an impressive capacity of 19 litres.
Overall, this a fantastic product which will last for a long time. Many reviewers also rave about how quiet it is, meaning you can comfortably take calls while this machine is doing its thing.
This compact shredder has a handle to make it easier to move around, and can conveniently be placed on top of your desk or underneath a table.
Capable of shredding 8 pages of A5 as well as credit cards and staples, this is a useful little machine that's budget-friendly. It's not suitable for larger offices but will definitely be of interest to those who don't have much space in their home office.
Having been in the office accessories business since 1917, the Fellowes brand certainly know a thing or two about making good quality products.
This shredder cuts documents into 2500 pieces, so it undoubtedly gets the job done! Plus, it can fit 9 sheets at a time and has a decent capacity size. Sadly though, it needs to cool down for 45 minutes after 10 minutes of work - not what we'd expect from such an expensive product.
This efficient, reliable shredder is capable of working through piles of paper before needing a rest. It has forward and reverse functions in case anything gets jammed, plus it has a large 14 litre capacity bin. Furthermore, the P-4 security level is primed to shred sensitive documents.
The only downsides are the high price and the fact that this is a very heavy product, so it may be difficult to lug around your office.
This cross-cut shredder from Bonsaii has some fantastic features, such as a transparent window that allows you to see when the bin is full, and an overheating protection system that prompts the machine to shut off automatically if it gets too hot. In addition, it can take up to 6 sheets at any given time and will cut them into 4x45 mm strips.
However, this product only has a P-3 security rating, so it's okay for shredding info like addresses but not great for things like bank details that could lead to fraudulent activity.
This shredder from the AmazonBasics range is simple and straightforward to use. It's incredibly affordable and looks stylish. Plus, it has a very respectable capacity of 14.4 litres.
Unfortunately, the exact security rating isn't listed on the packaging, which is frustrating. Also, this product only works for 2 minutes and then needs 30 minutes of cooldown time - so you might not be able to get much done during your workday!
